Educational objectives The course in Applied Biology provides students with fundamental knowledge of the organization of living matter, as well as the structure and function of the cell and the main biological and molecular mechanisms that regulate cellular processes.

Particular attention is given to the mechanisms of transmission and expression of genetic information, cellular proliferation and differentiation processes, and the basic principles of biological homeostasis.

This course constitutes a foundational prerequisite for the understanding of subsequent courses in Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and the core professional disciplines.
Prerequisites The achievement of the learning outcomes requires a basic knowledge of General Chemistry, with particular reference to the fundamental principles of the structure of matter and chemical interactions.
Teaching methods Face-to-face lectures.

Learning verification modality Multiple-choice test consisting of 30 questions, each with 5 answer options, of which only one is correct. Each correct answer is awarded 1 point. There are no penalties for incorrect or unanswered questions.

The time allowed for completing the test is 30 minutes.

Extended program Characteristics of living organisms. Biological macromolecules: proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates (general overview). Organization of the eukaryotic cell. Bacteria and viruses: general overview. Animal eukaryotic cell. Plasma membrane: structure and functions, with particular reference to mechanisms of transport and cell communication; cytoplasm; ribosomes; smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum; Golgi apparatus; lysosomes; peroxisomes; mitochondria and the energy problem; cytoskeleton (general overview); nucleus and nucleolus. DNA and RNA: structure and function. Chromatin organization and chromosomes. Human karyotype. Gene expression (general overview). Cell cycle and its regulation. Reproduction in multicellular organisms; meiosis and its significance; male and female gametogenesis.

Educational objectives Knowledge and understanding of the structure and ultrastructure of cells, tissues and organs and correlation between structure and function to understand the phisio-pathogenetic processes.
Prerequisites In order to be able to understand and apply the majority of the contents described within the course, the student must have acquired basic knowledge of cellular biology and chemistry.
Teaching methods Face to face with slide projections.

Learning verification modality The exam includes an oral exam of Histology (almost three questions. about 20 minutes) to assess logical and knowledge competence learning and the ability to interpret data. The oral exam will verify that the student is able to communicate, with method, propriety of language and of exposure.
A further question on the minimum essential knowledge may be asked in the event of an unsatisfactory answer to the 3 previous questions.
The final grade will be the arithmetic weighted average of the grades obtained in the individual disciplines.
