Contents The course introduces students to the fundamentals of scientific communication in English, with a focus on accessing, understanding, and evaluating scientific literature, as well as the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic contexts.
Reference texts Lecture slides and teaching materials provided by the lecturers. A scientific article for final discussion (exam).
Educational objectives The course aims to develop students’ ability to access, understand, and critically evaluate scientific information in English.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify and distinguish between different types of scientific sources
- perform basic literature searches using academic databases
- evaluate the reliability and impact of scientific publications
- use AI tools to support literature search and information synthesis
- critically assess AI-generated outputs
- understand and use basic scientific English terminology.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of English language (A2-B1 level recommended).
Teaching methods - Lectures delivered in English
- Guided demonstrations of academic search tools and databases
- Practical examples of literature search and evaluation
- Discussion of AI-generated outputs and critical issues
- In-class reading and discussion of scientific papers.
Other information Attendance is strongly recommended, as the course includes practical demonstrations and interactive components.
Learning verification modality Final oral examination: discussion of a scientific article chosen by the student in agreement with the lecturers. The assessment aims to verify the ability to:
- identify reliable scientific sources
- understand key concepts
- use appropriate scientific terminology.
Extended program Introduction and presentation of the course. What is scientific research? What is the difference between a scientific article and an informative article? How is a scientific paper structured? Scientific literature: search methods and AI applications. Working groups on scientific papers.
