| Contents | Basic and applied knowledge on insects and other animal pests of olive trees. Information will be provided on the biology and on the quantitative and qualitative damages caused by the different species. In addition, notions on different monitoring techniques and protection strategies will be provided. |

| Educational objectives | The course aims to provide basic and applied knowledge on insects and other animal pests of olive tree and oil industry. It also aims to give the student a complete view of the activities and problems concerning the control of harmful species in order to reduce losses while maintaining the quality and healthiness of food. |

| Learning verification modality | The evaluation of the students is carried out with an oral exam of about 30 minutes on the topics discussed during the lessons. The following skills will be evaluated: language, capacity to make links and find solutions. |
| Extended program | LESSONS Outlines of General and Applied Entomology. Main arthropods pests of olive: Bactrocera oleae, Saissetia oleae, Prays oleae, Palpita unionalis,Phleotribus scarabeoides, Hylesinus oleiperda, Otiorrhynchus cribricollis, Resseliella oleisuga, Liothrips oleae, pathogen vectors, secondary scale pests, Zeuzera pyrina, Halyomorpha halys; other secondary species. Outlines of the main vertebrate and invertebrates pests of the oil industry. LABORATORY AND FIELD Laboratory observations will be carried out to provide a practical knowledge of the morphology of the organisms studied during the frontal lessons. Observations will be conducted by examining photographic material and specimens prepared and / or collected in the field and then observed on the binocular for the recognition of the taxonomic groups of interest. Visits to conventional and intensive olive groves with different management systems will be carried out (IPM, organic). |

| Educational objectives | The aim of this course is to provide students with the foundational knowledge necessary to: a) Understand the main diseases affecting olive; b) Become familiar with the principal diagnostic techniques used to identify the pathogens responsible for the major diseases of olive; c) Learn the main techniques for managing diseases affecting olive. Furthermore, building on the knowledge outlined above, the course aims to develop the following skills: a) Designing a diagnostic protocol for the identification of the main pathogens affecting olive; b) Developing integrated management strategies for the principal diseases of olive. |
| Prerequisites | A good knowledge of the English language is very useful for further exploring the topics covered during the course through the reading of scientific texts and articles. |
| Teaching methods | The course, with a total duration of 27 hours, is structured into theoretical lectures and technical-practical laboratory sessions. The theoretical lectures will cover all the topics included in the syllabus. The practical sessions will allow students to become familiar with the main laboratory analyses used to assess the phytosanitary status of various olive tissues. |
