Contents
The course introduces the fundamental principles of chemical risk assessment and management, with reference to safety in workplaces and laboratories. The concepts of hazard, risk, prevention, protection and risk communication will be discussed, also through the analysis of major industrial accidents. The course will also address the European and national regulatory framework, with particular attention to the REACH and CLP regulations, the classification, labelling and packaging of hazardous substances and mixtures, safety data sheets, and the main tools for identifying and managing risks associated with chemical agents.
Reference texts
No compulsory textbook is required. Teaching material, including slides, case studies and regulatory references, will be provided during the course and made available on the UniStudium platform.

Educational objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge to understand, assess and manage chemical risk, with reference to safety in workplaces and laboratories. The course also introduces the European and national regulatory framework for chemicals, with particular attention to the REACH and CLP regulations, the classification and labelling of hazardous substances and mixtures, and the main tools for risk communication and risk management.

The main knowledge acquired will include:

the concepts of hazard, risk, exposure, risk assessment, risk management and risk communication;
the distinction between prevention and protection measures;
the main regulatory references on chemical safety, including Legislative Decree 81/2008 and the REACH and CLP regulations;
the criteria for classifying hazardous substances and mixtures according to the CLP regulation;
the main elements of CLP labelling, including pictograms, hazard statements and precautionary statements;
the role of safety data sheets in chemical risk management;
the general principles of the REACH regulation, including registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals;
the role of ECHA and the information tools available for consulting data on chemical substances;
examples of major industrial accidents and their impact on the development of regulations and safety practices.

The main skills developed will include:

recognizing the main hazards associated with chemical agents;
correctly interpreting CLP labels and safety data sheets;
relating hazardous properties, exposure conditions and risk management measures;
identifying suitable prevention and protection measures in simple chemical risk scenarios;
using information from regulatory and technical-scientific sources to assess and communicate chemical risk appropriately.

Teaching methods
The course will be delivered through lectures covering the main course topics, integrated with the guided discussion of case studies related to industrial accidents and chemical risk scenarios. Interactive in-class activities will be included, also through the use of digital tools, together with a final practical activity focused on the analysis of simple risk scenarios, aimed at consolidating the concepts discussed during the course.
Learning verification modality
Attendance is compulsory for at least 80% of the classes. Final assessment will consist of a written test, scheduled according to the official examination calendar, including 10 questions on the theoretical concepts covered during the course and simple case studies. The test is aimed at assessing the student’s understanding of the main concepts related to chemical risk, classification and labelling of hazardous substances, REACH and CLP regulations, safety data sheets, and prevention and protection measures.

Chemical agents and hazardous chemical agents according to current regulations.
CLP Regulation: scope, classification, hazard classes and hazard categories.
CLP labelling elements: pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements and supplemental information.
Safety data sheets: structure, main sections and use for risk prevention and management.
Concepts of toxicity, dose, dose-effect and dose-response relationships; LD50, LC50 and occupational exposure limit values.
Chemical incompatibilities, safe storage and main critical issues in the management of chemicals in the laboratory.
REACH Regulation: general principles, registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals.
Role of ECHA and information tools for consulting data on chemical substances.
Application of the concepts discussed during the course to simple chemical risk scenarios.
