Contents
Lung cancer. Other pulmonary tumors. Mediastinal syndromes. Lung abscess. Bronchiectasis. Pleural effusions. Pneumothorax. Pleural mesothelioma. Mediastinal Tumors: thymomas, germ cell tumors, neurogenic tumors. Chest Trauma.
Reference texts
Shields'. General Thoracic Surgery
Educational objectives
Basic knowledge of thoracic surgery
Teaching methods
The course is developed with a series of lectures on the topics reported in the course program. The student is required to joing the practical curriculum partecipating to observational and discussion sessions in the operating room and step-down unit.
Other information
Class attendance is required
Learning verification modality
The exam is carried out in a single session through an oral test lasting approximately 15 minutes, based on the program of the frontal lessons provided. One question is focused on the surgical diseases of the respiratory system, the second one is focused on the medical diseases. It is possible a further in-depth question, in case of an unsatisfactory answer to the previous questions.
Extended program
Lung cancer. Other pulmonary tumors. Mediastinal syndromes. Lung abscess. Bronchiectasis. Pleural effusions. Pneumothorax. Pleural mesothelioma. Mediastinal Tumors: thymomas, germ cell tumors, neurogenic tumors. Chest Trauma.

Contents
In detail, the contents of the lectures will be: the mechanisms of respiratory diseases, their aetiology as well as the basic concepts required to effectively evaluate and treat them.
Reference texts
Harrisons Manual of Medicine, 20th Edition (2021), Dennis L. Kasper , Anthony S. Fauci . Stephen L. Hauser , Dan L. Longo, J. Larry Jameson, Joseph Loscalzo.
Educational objectives
The student must: 1) demonstrate knowledge of the physiopathological mechanisms of the main pathologies of the respiratory system. 2)knowing how to manage the main clinical respiratory patologies 3) knowing how to make a differential diagnosis
4) know the treatments of the main pathologies of the respiratory system
Prerequisites
The student must have passed the exams of the Courses in Physiology, Microbiology and Physiopathology
Teaching methods
theoretical lessons
Other information
none
Learning verification modality
oral test lasting about 15 minutes for each of the two subjects of the module (diseases of the respiratory tract and thoracic surgery). 1-2 questions will be asked about the program. Interpretation of tests such as spirometry and arterial blood gas analysis may be required. The verification of the competences acquired during the internship takes place through a description of diagnostic-therapeutic process.
METHOD OF AWARDING THE FINAL GRADE: arithmetic average of the two grades obtained in each discipline.
Extended program
PHYSIOLOGY OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM, Respiratory function tests (Spirometry; Diffusion capacity test; Arterial Blood Gases and acid-base balance); Bronchial asthma; Chronic bronchitis; Pulmonary emphysema. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Diffuse interstitial lung diseases. Sarcoidosis. Respiratory infections. Tuberculosis (TB). Respiratory Failure. Pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary edema.
