Extended program The objective of the course is the analysis of the pragmatic aspects of linguistic communication. The knowledge acquired in the description of the levels of grammar, will, therefore, be integrated through the consideration of language as a system aimed not only at 'saying,' but also at 'communicating.'
Indeed, the ability to interact through language involves a complex set of skills that go far beyond linguistic competence in the strict sense. Knowing how to interact with language means being able to operate on complex textual units, to process and understand inferential plans, to recognize the link between text and context, and to identify the function of each communicative act and the purposes for which it was processed.
These skills make it possible to correctly identify the 'speakers' meaning' (as well as the meaning actually expressed) and to interpret both figurative language (metaphors, ironies, etc.) and the many indirect linguistic acts we make use of in everyday speech.
The perspective from which the skills underlying the communicative use of language will be analyzed is basically that of experimental pragmatics. Topics such as the relationship between pragmatics, mind and brain, the development of communicative competence, and disorders of pragmatic abilities in pathology will, therefore, also be introduced.
