Educational objectives The student should be able to diagnose and treat work-related illnesses. He will need to know how to prevent and treat them. Furthermore, he will have to know the appropriate diagnostic investigations for the early diagnosis and follow-up of occupational diseases
Prerequisites In order to learn and be able to apply the principles of occupational medicine in clinical practice, it is useful for the student to:
- have taken exams in chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, physiology and general pathology;
- is able to carry out a medical history and a physical examination;
- know the main symptoms and signs related to pathologies of the respiratory system and the peripheral nervous system.
Teaching methods lectures on all the topics of the program. As regards those relating to occupational and environmental pathologies, where possible, discussion of clinical cases will be used;
- practical activities in the laboratory/outpatient clinic/ward, related to the diagnosis of occupational and environmental pneumopathies and allergies;

Learning verification modality The exam will essentially concern the topics of occupational medicine and professional and environmental toxicology covered during the formal lessons and supplementary teaching activities.
The exam will consist of a single oral test, aimed at ascertaining both the ability to know and understand, and the ability to apply the skills acquired, and the ability to explain. During the interview, which lasts approximately 20-40 minutes, 2 to 4 topics related to the teaching program will be discussed.
Extended program Definition and objectives of Occupational Medicine: Accidents and occupational diseases in Italy and in Umbria. The 4 groups of risk factors.
Environmental and personal prevention in the workplace.
Health surveillance. The diagnostic process in occupational medicine. The work environment as a cause or contributory cause of illness or an aggravating factor for pre-existing pathologies.
Environmental monitoring and exposure limit values. Biological monitoring.
Legislative Decree 81/08. Health Surveillance.
Occupational risks in the healthcare sector.

Educational objectives The main knowledge that students will acquire are:
- the socio-health relevance of accidents and occupational diseases;
- the practice of prevention interventions in the workplace;
- the most frequent occupational pathologies encountered in Italy;
- the epidemiology, health effects and treatment of tobacco smoking, as well as its interactions with occupational risk factors.

The main skills that students will acquire are:
- ability to identify and assess risks in some work sectors;
- ability to interpret the results of laboratory and instrumental tests for the study of pathologies of the respiratory system and of the peripheral nervous system and of occupational and environmental intoxications;
- ability to diagnose the main occupational pathologies;

gases, vapours, fumes.

Occupational bronchial asthma. Extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

Pneumoconiosis: silicosis and asbestosis.

Diseases caused by physical agents (e.g. noise, vibrations, biomechanical overload
of the upper limb).

Lead poisoning and other metals (chromium, cadmium):

Occupational poisoning from solvents and gases (hexane, benzene, chloride of
vinyl monomer).
