- The undergraduate training activityof the SSD VET 08 involves the active participation of students in clinical activities at the ambulatories and diagnostic laboratories of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Emergency Service, carried out on a daily basis on spontaneous clinical cases on domestic and non-conventional pets, horses and food-producing animals.

- Basic knowledge on the approach to clinical cases of internal medicine in small and large animals.
In particular the intended purpose is the achievement of practical skills required to the "first day vet " regarding the methodology in veterinary clinic and therapeutic procedures laid down in the basic log book developed by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Perugia.
Specifically, the present placement aims to ensure that the student is able to:
Skills and competences "Transversal" (Autonomy of judgment; Communication Skills; Learning Skills):
1. Communicate with the owner of the animal
2. Interact and communicate with the medical staff
3. Collect the patient's history properly
4. Complete a report and draw up a clinical record
5. Make a medical prescription
6. Understand and apply a standard operating procedure
7. Use the technological tools to obtain, process, share and communicate updated scientific and health information
8. Know the items for composing an invoice for one or more health benefits
9. Know the main administrative and medical-legal aspects and normative references of the profession of veterinary surgeon (medicines, animal health protection and health, registry, occupational activity, responsibility and professional ethics).
Professional Practical Skills: (Applied knowledge and understanding skills)
Common Skills for Different Animal Species
1. Approach and adequately contain an animal minimizing the operator's risk and stress for the patient
2. Make an appropriate triage in a subject related to a clinical emergency and / or handle problems related to first aid
3. Provide an adequate and complete physical examination
4. To undertake a more thorough physical examination (specific objective examination of an apparatus) where required by the issues highlighted
5. Analyze the anamnestic data and the direct clinical data and synthesize them in a list of differential diagnosis hypotheses
6. Set up an appropriate diagnostic protocol based on the list of diagnostic-differential hypotheses
7. Analyze the results of the diagnostic protocol (laboratory and imaging diagnostics) so as to formulate, where possible, a definitive diagnosis, therapy and prognosis
8. Administer drugs according to appropriate methods and dosages
9. Take, process, store, transport and properly dispose of the most common biological samples (blood, stool, urine, skin scrap)
10. Recognize the adequacy of the biological sample in relation to the required analysis
Specific Skills - Pets:
1. Evaluate the nutrition status of an animal and provide dietary advice to its owner.
2. Provide advice to the owner on daily management of your pet (diet, cleaning, etc.)
3. Take a vaccination
4. Educate the owner on the vaccine and prophylactic plans (eg filariosis, ectoparasites) to be taken against his pet
5. Monitor the hospitalized patient adequately
6. Recognize when the euthanasia of a pet is necessary and be able to perform it properly both in the human profile and in communication with the owner, or under the technical / pharmacological
Specific Skills - Income and Horse Animals:
1. Perform a rectal scan
2. Make a rummy survey
3. Perform an electrocardiogram of the surface and interpret an electrocardiogram in the equine species
4. Know how to handle regulatory compliance with animal protection and animal health in breeding and transport, farm medicine management, zoo
5. Ability to evaluate, analyze and improve the welfare and health conditions of animals in the holding
Specific laboratory skills:
1. Know and recognize health risks in laboratories and implement strategies to eliminate or limit such risks
2. Communicate effectively the standard operating procedures
3. Perform the most common laboratory analysis
Specific Skills - Ultrasound and Cardiology:
1. Interpret a normal and pathological radiogram (chest and abdominal) of a pet
2. Interpret and perform basic abdominal ultrasound
3. Interpret an echocardiography
4. Perform and interpret an electrocardiogram - Prerequisites
- To understand and know how to apply the techniques and interpretive trails and diagnosis used during the training it is necessary to have passed the exam of Pathology and Medical Clinic I. The maximum effectiveness of the practical training is obtained when the Sudente has also passed the exam to Pathology and Medical Clinic II.
- Teaching methods
- Active participation in the clinical-diagnostic and therapeutic procedures carried out together with the teachers of the Section of Internal Medicine on clinical cases presented or hospitalized at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Faculty.
Trainees follow the activities under the guidance of the physician on duty for the day at Internal Medicine. - Learning verification modality
- Students Trainees are evaluated directly by the teacher in the course of practical activities carried out daily. They are asked to keep a personal record of activities including an indication of the clinical-diagnostic laboratories and therapeutical sections of the hospital frequented daily. The individual activities, contained in a booklet of the internship are approved by the teacher responsible, who expresses an opinion on the overall final synthetic diligence and profit of the trainee.
- Extended program
- The undergraduate training includes compulsory participation in the activities of the Service of Internal Medicine for 30 consecutive days.
It is necessary to wear garments (green or coat) and suitable footwear.
It is necessary to have a phonendoscope.
On the first day students must sign up to 8.30 am and communicate their attendance to the trainee teacher (Dr. Birettoni) or the doctor in turn for First Aid Service on holidays.
A document with behavior and safety guidelines is then delivered to them.
The group of trainees is organized in turnovers (8.30 -14.30, 14.30-20, 20-8.30 see day type) and then divided into sub-groups that will rotate through the services of the Internal Medicine: Ordinary/Intensive Care and Therapies, Hematology and Laboratory Diagnostics, Flexible Endoscopy and Cardiology/Ultrasound.
There are 5 days of activity on animals of animal interest in hospital facilities (Voc. Pilo) or in external farms under the supervision of the Internal Medicine professors or of freelance contracted practitioners.
Trainees also serve during the night and during public holidays to support the activities of the Emergency Service of the Educational Veterinary Hospital. After a night on duty the next day trainees are free.
EXAMPLE DAY IN iNTERNAL MEDICINE AS TRAINEE
8.30 AM plenary collegial Visit of the hospitalized patients, during which will take place the transfer of deliveries by the trainees and the physicians on duty the previous night;
9 AM beginning of the therapies agreed and discussed with the doctor in turn in Internal Medicine and with the doctor in charge of the therapies;
10 AM division of the trainees for the various services of the Department;
2 PM exchange shift trainees with passage of deliveries;
2.30 PM division of the trainees for the various services of the Department;
20 o'clock exchange shift trainees with passage of deliveries
