- The self and the "other" in American Literature. From Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" to Gwen Florio's "Silent Hearts" (2019). The course will investigate the relationship a character builds with what is "other" from themselves. Racial and religious otherness will be studied in the two novels and in the respective geo-historical environments.
- Reference texts
- Mark Twain, "Huckleberry Finn," Gwen Florio, "Silent Hearts", F. J. Turner, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" (only excerpts).
- Educational objectives
- Students are supposed to study Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" in its social and literary context. Furthermore, they're meant to study Florio's novel about the aftermath of 9/11 and learn about the American presence in Afghanistan at the beginning of this century, focusing on how the novel tells of the culture clash between American and Afghani people and customs.

Fleming, together with further material that can be asked the professor.
