- Section of Diagnosis of structural damages:
Defining characteristics of the material wall. Diagnostic process in the path by the expression of static instability, determination of the disturbing causes that led to these failures. The importance of types of masonry in the seismic behavior of buildings. The diagnostic process as a series of investigations leading to the formulation of a diagnosis: history, physical examination, investigations with instruments.
Section of Special Structural Problems:
Wooden structures, Glass structures, Reinforced masonry structures and
Composite materials for the reinforcement of existing masonry
structures. - Reference texts
- Mastrodicasa Sisto - Dissesti statici delle strutture edilizie – Ed. Hoepli
Teaching material and specific references provided by the teacher. - Educational objectives
- The main objectives of teaching are to provide students with:
-the tools needed to trace the causes that have a certain damage in building structures, through a diagnostic procedure. Evaluate possible intervention strategies;
- theoretical and practical bases for the analysis and calculation of wooden structures, glass structures and FRP reinforced existing structures. - Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of Dynamics of Structures, Computational Mechanics of Structures and Mechanical Testing of Materials, with particular reference to the characterisation of masonry, are required.
- Teaching methods
- Theoretical lessons, practical training - face to face and
seminars. - Other information
- None
- Learning verification modality
- The exam consists of a written test an oral test. The assessment of Structural Diagnostic module requires a written exams lasting two hours on topics of diagnosis and therapy of the upheavals of the structures.
The oral exam of about 30 minutes long concerns all the topics covered in the part of Special structural problems. - Extended program
- Section of Diagnosis of structural damages:
Diagnostic process in the path by the expression of static instability, determination of the disturbing causes that led to these failures. Key events of static and dynamic instability: foundation failure, crushing, flexion, pushing and seismic action, depression of horizontal structures. Engineering approach to the study of damaged masonry. Monitoring progression of cracking and deformation techniques with traditional and contemporary methods.
The importance of types of masonry in the seismic behavior of buildings. Methods of assessing the quality of mansory walls, estimate levels of knowledge and confidence factors for masonry. Consolidation and repair of building and monuments. Analysis of instability: case studies.
Part of Special structural problems.
Wooden structures:
General considerations on the structure in solid wood and glulam. Technology of laminated wood. Criteria and calculation methods. Limit States. Structural types. Glass structures:
Mechanical behavior of glass. Float glass, multilayer, tempered and annealed. Design criteria, actions, modeling and verification. Examples of design.
Reinforced masonry structures:
Materials and construction techniques. Composite materials for the reinforcement of existing masonry structures
Mechanical behavior of composite materials. Use of composite materials in reinforcement of masonry structures.
