First part (Institutional Course: 36 hours = 6 Credits)
Historical profile of ancient Greek and Latin Christian Literature in the first five centuries: authors, works, literary genres and doctrine.
Second part: Genres and forms of controversy in the controversial writings of ancient Christian literature

Educational objectives
The course, in the institutional part, focuses on the knowledge of the Christian Literature of the first five centuries and the role of cultural mediation between the ancient and medieval world, keeping in constant reference the history of ancient Christianity.
The monographic part is intended to illustrate the historical reasons of the controversial works present in Christian literature and the forms of the controversial genre that arose in opposition to polytheism, to Jewish error, to heretical doctrines.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Greek language and Latin
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons: lessons will respect the course program; during lessons one will enter into the merits of some concepts and terms specifically related to the subject and will settle the novelty semantic and conceptual.
Other information
Lessons will be supplemented by reading and commenting on selected texts that will be distributed in the classroom.
The commentary of the texts is also aimed at a better understanding of the criticism of the text.
Learning verification modality
Oral test with open response stimulus to check the knowledge of the program, orientation within the discipline, literary historical contextualization and interdisciplinary relationship.
Duration of the oral test: 20/30 minutes. Voting in thirty-five.

INSTITUTIONAL PART:
Origins of Christian Literature; Apostolic period:
Apologetic literature and Greek-language apologists; Ireneo of Lyon against to gnosticism; Latin literature and origins in an African environment; The literature of martyrdom (Acts and Passions); The Alexandrian school and its exponents; The fourth and fifth century literature: the Cappadocian authors, the second school in Alexandria; the Antiochian school; Western Christian authors between the 4th and 5th centuries (Ambrose, Ilarius, Hieronymus, Augustinus)
PART
MONOGRAPHIC :Genres and forms of controversy in the controversial writings of ancient Christian literature.The reasons why the controversial genre is born and the ways in which the controversy is conducted towards the pagan world and polytheism, the Jewish error (or rejection of the Messiah), the heterodox doctrines that conflict with tradition will be explained.
Some of the most representative works of the three types of disputes will be read and commented.
