Educational objectives An adequate knowledge of the the Medieval Latin literature in its development (6th-14th). Understanding the principles of the Textual criticism. Critical reading skills of commented texts during classes, with special attention to the female literature
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of Latin language and Medieval history. Useful: knowledge of Medieval history and Latin paleography.
Teaching methods Frontal lessons on the subjects covered by the program. Some seminars will be held at the end of the course to discuss the most significant historiographic issues concerning the Medieval female literature.
Other information Non-attending students must add the study of the following books, that will be subject to examination:
- Paolo Chiesa, Venticinque lezioni di filologia mediolatina, Firenze, Sismel, 2016 (12 chapters at choice; for the module I).
Non-attending students will have to consult the teacher at the beginning of the course and before starting the study of the program (see the reception hours in the web-page http://www.unipg.it/pagina-personale?n=patrizia.stoppacci).
Learning verification modality Oral examination in annual sessions to verify the program on the topics of the two modules; expected average duration 20'-30'. The purpose of the test is to verify the knowledge gained during the course, evaluate the critical skills and the ability to expose the main topics discussed.
Extended program The course aims to provide students with an overview of the history of the Latin literature produced during the Centuries of the Middle Ages (with a periodization from the 6th to the 15th Centuries), a review of the main literary genres caught in their critical-historical evolution and a selection of the most representative authors (such as Boethius, Cassiodorus, Isidorus Hispalensis, Beda, Gregorius Turonensis, Paulus Diaconus, Alcuinus, Einhardus, Gerbertus Aureliacensis, Liutprandus Cremonensis, Abaelardus, Carmina Burana, Salimbene de Adam, Iacoponus de Tuderto). In addition, an introduction to philology and its problems will be offered, in particular those related to the textual criticism and its application in the field of the edition of medieval latin texts.

Extended program The course will be dedicated to the discovery of Medieval female literature, trough the examination of some specific female authors, such as Egeria, Baudonivia, Hugeburga, Dhuoda, Rosvita di Gandersheim (and the Dominae ottoniane Hadwig and Adelaide), Eloisa e Abelardo, Ildegarda di Bingen, Trotula, Chiara di Assisi, Angela da Foligno, Cecilia Coppoli da Perugia, Battista Malatesta, Christine de Pizan.
