Contents
The theoretical lessons will be integrated with guided visits to some important archives preserved in Perugia and with practical exercises on the use of archival inventories.

Educational objectives
The course aims to provide the basic information required to be able to organize, manage, enhance, preserve and provide access to archives in the three phases of their life: current, storage and historical.

Teaching methods
Special attention will be given to the theoretical basis of archival doctrine relating to the arrangement and inventory of archives.
Other information
Attending the lessons and partecipating in the guided visits to the archives are highly recommended.

Extended program
Archival Science. Basic elements about the history of archival studies. Archives and documents: basic notions. Archives and other cultural heritage: similarities and differences. The archive management in the three phases of the life of archives: current, storage and historical. The four types of archives: state, public, ecclesiastical and private archives. The organization of the archival service and the management manual. The archivist’s working tools (protocol, classification plan and preservation plan, inventory). The filing, rearranging and inventorying. The compilation of an archival inventory.The normalization in archival description. The access to archives and the archival quotations. The antique trade. The enhancement and promotion of archives: documentary exhibitions, conferences and educational activities. Notes on the physical preservation of archives as a cultural heritage: repositories, installation works, furnishings and containers for documents. The legislation in force for archives: obligations, prohibitions, sanctions. The central and peripheral organization of the Italian Archival Administration with particular reference to the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendences and State Archives. Bibliography related to the archives of Umbria.
