Educational objectives
Basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese linguistics, and (oral and written) composition of simple sentences (HSK level 3: B1).
Prerequisites
Students can take second year Mandarin Chinese exam after they pass first year's one.
Teaching methods
Standard classes at Dipartimento (Palazzo S. Bernardo) plus classes taught by native Mandarin Chinese teachers at CLA.
Other information
• If the student passes the written part of the test taken at CLA in all its sections, its validity term is one year, in compliance with CLA rules.
• Erasmus students do not need to take "Chinese 2" exam, provided that the Commission in charge puts an equivalent exam in the learning agreement (replacing Chinese 2 exam).
Learning verification modality
PART 1: WRITTEN TESTS (¿¿)
(A) DICTATION (¿¿): This part of the test contains two types of dictations (pinyin and characters): 1. 1. Pinyin dictation (¿¿¿¿): Students are required to transcribe some words (not necessarily explained in class) into pinyin; 2. Sentences dictation (¿¿¿¿): Students are required to transcribe some sentences into Chinese characters. Sentences made up with words taken from the units included in the program (even those not explained in class), the complementary words list (¿¿¿¿) which are marked with an * in the glossary of the book "Buongiorno Cina", any additional character, word or phrase explained by native Mandarin Chinese teacher during the year will be tested. Part (A) DICTATION will be considered passed when the student gets at least 9/15 in each of the two tests. The score is out of thirty and is calculated summing the scores of the two tests (e.g.: 9/15 + 9/15 = 18/30).
(B) COMPOSITION (¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿) (1 hour): students have to write 15 sentences using 15 different given group words or fixed expressions (e.g.: a sentence containing ¿¿.¿¿.; a sentence containing ¿.¿.; etc.). Paper or electronic dictionaries are not allowed.

(C) IDENTIFYING RADICALS AND STROKE ORDER (¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿, 30 minutes): The student will be given 15 characters of which s/he has to identify radical and stroke order. Each character of which radical and stroke order will be correctly identified is worth 2 points. Total score: 30. The score is out of thirty and the test is considered passed when the student gets at least 18/30.
**
(D) GRAMMAR TEST AND TRANSLATION OF SENTENCES (¿¿¿¿¿¿¿, 2 hours): This part is composed by two tests: 1. Grammar test is composed by various questions on linguistic structures explained in class. It can be made of blanks to be filled with structures or grammar particles, translation exercises from Italian into Mandarin Chinese and from Mandarin Chinese into Italian, questions on syntax analysis or linguistics. This section includes sentences and characters from the grammar slide deck. 2. The translation test is an essay (not longer than 350 characters) on topical subjects also with reference to the selected readings analysed with the Visiting Professor to be translated from Mandarin Chinese into Italian. Only paper dictionary is allowed. Part (D) GRAMMAR TEST AND TRANSLATION OF SENTENCES is considered passed when the student gets 9/15 in each of the two tests. The score is out of thirty and is calculated summing the scores of the two tests (e.g.: 9/15 + 9/15 = 18/30).

Any failed part of the exam can NOT be tried again on the next exam date, and the student will be asked of compiling the complete written exam again. WRITTEN TEST IS ADMINISTERED AT “CLA” (THE STANDARD DURATION OF THE TEST IS ABOUT 4 HOURS.)
Passing EVERY part of the written exam in the SAME SESSION (A, B, C, D) is compulsory to take the second and last part of the exam: the oral test. The student accesses the oral test with the arithmetic mean of the written tests = (A+B+C+D)/4.
PART 2: ORAL TEST (¿¿) ADMINISTERED AT DIPARTIMENTO
(D) ORAL TEST (¿¿): The student has to randomly pick a unit of "Buongiorno Cina" among those included in the program (even if it was not explained in class), then read the text of the unit without being helped by pinyin, close the book and summarize it in Mandarine Chinese (¿¿¿¿), then discuss about the topic with the native teacher. Questions on Mandarin Chinese grammar (grammar slide deck uploaded on Unistudium, bibliography on grammar, etc.) will also be asked.
The score is out of thirty. THE ORAL TEST IS ADMINISTERED AT DIPARTIMENTO (THE STANDARD DURATION IS ABOUT 20 MINUTES FOR EACH STUDENT).

***
The exam is considered passed ONLY when the student passed every part (written and oral) of it. The student can try again the exam on the next exam day if a part of the written text is not passed, but will have to pass all the parts together.
BOOKING YOUR EXAM (WRITTEN AND ORAL) IS COMPULSORY, STUDENTS WHO DID NOT BOOK THE EXAM WILL NOT BE TESTED.
