Contents
Russian literature of the early twentieth century.

The course provides a first approach to the study of Russian history and literature of the early XX century.
The great historical-cultural events that led to the birth of literary and artistic avant-garde in Russia (with particular regard to the October Revolution as a central moment in Russian history) will be explored, an attempt will be made to give an overview of trends, schools and authors who recognized themselves in the avant-garde, deepening some of the their most important expressions in the field of arts and culture without, however, neglecting the work of artistic and literary groups, which recognized themselves in the flow of the XIX century tradition. The historical, political and literary process that will culminate with the birth of socialism realism as the only artistic method admitted in the USSR will be illustrated.

Educational objectives
The course provides a first approach to the study of Russian history and literature of the the first half of twentieth century. Its main goal is to make students aware of the specificities of the Russian historical and cultural context of the early twentieth century.
Prerequisites
Students must have basic knowledge concerning the European and extra-European history of the twentieth century.
Teaching methods
The course is organized as follows:
classroom lectures; reading with commentary and analysis of works; screening of films related to the main topics.
Other information
Attendance: at least 60% of lessons.
To be admitted to the examination, students who do not attend classes must arrange in advance an alternative program with the course professor.
Learning verification modality
Final oral test. Questions covering themes of history and literature.
