Educational objectives | At the end of this course, students will have been introduced to the concepts of classification and growth of microorganisms and they should understand how microorganisms survive and how they interact with us. |
Prerequisites | For a proper understanding, the student should have the basic knowledge of cell biology, immunology, physiology and anatomy. |
Teaching methods | Front lectures, using as teaching tools projectors. |
Learning verification modality | The oral test consists of an interview aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge, the complete understanding and the ability to link on the subjects listed in the program. The oral test will also the communication skills of the student, the use of appropriate language and the ability to synthesize. |
Extended program | - Difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Morphology of bacteria. Structure of the prokaryotic cell: cell wall, structures outside the wall, cytoplasmic membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, cytoplasmic inclusions. Cell wall (differences between Gram-negative and Gram-positive). Structures external to the cell wall. The spore bacteria: structure and differentiation. Growth curve. - Pathogenicity and virulence. Virulence determinants. Infectious disease source, penetration and elimination of microorganisms. Bacterial toxins. - Principles of virology: general characteristics, size and shapes of viruses.
