Extended program Homeostasis and stress.
• Concept of homeostasis, integrated responses (autonomous, endocrine and behavioral), role of the autonomic nervous system, role of the endocrine system.
• Selie stress phases, integrated response to stress. Nervous arm: attack or flight reaction, effects of circulating catecholamines. Endocrine arm: effects of cortisol in the resistance phase and in that of exhaustion.
Learning and memory.
• Mechanisms of synaptic learning: post-tetanus enhancement, habituation, sensitization, LTP and LTD.
• Memory structure (declarative, procedural), amnesia, neural correlates. The HM case, experiments on animals: role of the hippocampus in the consolidation of memories, working memory and spatial memory.
Hypothalamus and emotions.
• Structure and functions of the hypothalamus: regulation of endocrine function, regulation of food and fluid intake, regulation of body temperature, control of the vegetative component of emotional states.
• Emotions: the theories of James and Lange and of Cannon and Bard. Broca's limbic lobe and the Papez circuit. Klüver Bucy syndrome and the role of the amygdala. The pleasure centers and the reward system.
Language and lateralization.
• Areas involved in the production and understanding of language. Wada technique. Broca aphasia and Wernike aphasia. Sign language and aphasia.
• Structural asymmetries of the brain. Corpus callosum and effects of split brain (anomia, alessia). Hemispheric specialization.
EEG and sleep.
• Characteristics of the electroencephalographic layout and rhythms. Origin of potentials and concept of synchronization. Clinical use of EEG and evoked potentials.
• Phases of sleep and their characteristics. Composition of sleep and involved nervous structures. Circadian rhythms and suprachiasmatic nucleus. Hypothesis on the function of sleep.
Attention and conscience.
• Relationships between attention and gaze direction. The neglect syndrome. Experiments based on imaging techniques. Animal electrophysiology experiments: posterior parietal cortex, V4 and FEF.
• Definition of consciousness, neural correlates, alterations of consciousness in physiological and pathological conditions. The theory of integrated information of Edelman and Tononi.

• Sensitivity and specificity of the test- (definition, sensitive/specific tests, positive and negative predictive value, prevalence- ROC curves analysis)
• Standardization (calibration of psychological testing - sampling - row and correct scores - standard error - equivalent scores)
