The course will examines in historical perspective internal conflicts in the North African and Middle Eastern States.- Reference texts
- There are not textbooks, the students will use articles and essays and on-line documents (mainly in English and French) that will be listed at the beginning of the course. Non attending students are required to contact the lecturer for the assignment of the textbooks and reading within the first three weeks.
- Educational objectives
- Knowledge and ability: At the end of the course, the students are expected to demonstrate a deep knowledge of the political systems and the internal conflicts of the Arab states of North Africa and Middle East. Applied Knowledge and understanding: Students will have the ability to place contemporary Middle Eastern issues in larger contexts and to deploy critical arguments in analysing issues and evaluating sources. Communication skills: the students will demonstrate the ability to work independently and in groups (presentation of assigned reading) improve writing skills( including the ability to produce well organised and coherent essays to a deadline) .
- Prerequisites
- General knowledge of the international history in the twentieth century. Good knowledge of written English and/or French.
- Teaching methods
- The course will involve the class participation, through reading assignments and debates that will be scheduled in the course of the first two-three weeks. The students will be required to write a short paper and give a presentation on a specific topic.

- Attending students will be assess through: 1) reading assignments and debates that will be scheduled during the course. Readings will be assigned during the course, with specific due dates. a short essay on a specific topic and its presentation . Non attending students: oral examination (100% of the final marks. The oral examination will not only test the knowledge, but also the capacity of analysis and synthesis.
- Extended program
In 2011 popular uprisings overthrow the regimes in Tunisia,Egypta nd Libya; in other Arab countries (Morocco,Algeria,Bahrein,Kuwait) street protests quickened political reforms. The new political and institutional systems do not always result in democratic change The course will examines in historical perspective the “Arab Revolutions”, paying particular attention to the internal ( religious, ethnical, linguistic) conflicts. Through the analysis of electoral practices, constitutional drafts, the focus will be on the continuities and discontinuities with the authoritarian past.
