- Farming techniques of wildlife species reared in Italy (special focus on: fences, shelter, nutrition, reproduction, growth, methods of capture, transport, and slaughter).
Prophylaxis of major infectious diseases and parasitic zoonoses.
Visits to areas of natural and scientific interest.

- Educational objectives
- D1 – KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The core of the received knowledge is to provide students with the basic
concepts that form the basis of:
a) biology and behavior of wildlife;
b) main health issues;
c) farming and feeding techniques (wild ungulates and wild birds);
D2 – APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The skills that the student will have to prove on the basis of the knowledge acquired are:
a) to evaluate the suitability of the different forms of farming in relation to the species reared and its behavioral characteristics;
b) to be able to evaluate and understand the main health issues in farmed wildlife;
c) to understand the importance and issues of wildlife management in nature.
D3 – MAKING JUDGEMENTS
At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate independence of judgment in the following areas:
a) elements of wildlife management in captivity;
b) elements of wildlife management in nature;
D4 – COMMUNICATION
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
a) know how to organize, prepare and show to an audience of equal level of preparation, a program of wildlife management in captivity;
- having a debate with people of equal preparation and experts on different subjects, related to technical and structural characteristics of a wildlife farm;
- demonstrate language properties in both written and oral form, as well as the ability to use terminology (both scientific and suitable for the owner / breeder) appropriate to the profession of a veterinarian engaged in wildlife management.
D5 – LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- interpret and consult scientific/informative papers and know how to use the acquired knowledge to plan programs of wildlife management;
- know how to carry out bibliographical research;
- carry out permanent professional education, both in the private and public sectors, relying on the acquired knowledge. - Prerequisites
- In order to understand and know how to apply in practice the topics described in the course, it is necessary to have successfully passed the following exams: “Biologia Animale”, “Fisiologia generale speciale veterinaria”, “Zootecnia speciale” and “Biotecnologie applicate alle produzioni zootecniche”.

- Practical lessons at wild game farms and areas of naturalistic interest are favoured.

- The evaluation does not include written or oral exams. All students that have attended classes regularly, and participated in teaching activities at the farms, will be eligible.

- - Classification, biology and behaviour of main species of wild ungulates (3 h);
- Outline of conservation biology (3 h);
- Farming of wild ungulates and game birds (5 h);
- Infectious and parasitic diseases of wild ungulates and game birds (4 h);
- Visit to wild ungulates farm (5 h);
- Visit to game bird farm (5 h).
