- Contents
- Practical animal evaluation (phenotype) by information about coat colour, conformation, gaits and performances. Knowledge of cattle, sheep, goat, horse, pig, poultry, and some fish farming systems is required. Utilisation of biotechnologies in farm animals
- Reference texts
- All the slides used during lectures and free lecture notes are available to student on-line in the faculty web site (Teledidattica) .
The suggested books are "Valutazione morfo-funzionale del cavallo" by A.L. Catalano and "Zootecnia speciale" by A. Falaschini - Educational objectives
- D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must
- have knowledge of the evolution of the sector and livestock,
- know the distribution and characteristics of the main bovine, ovine, caprine and swine breeds,
- know the morphological assessment methods and the breeding methods of the main animals of zootechnical interest, the different types of farming, the composition and quality of animal productions,
- know the main biotechnologies applied to livestock.
D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- evaluate livestock by recognizing morphological defects,
- determine the age of a horse and bovine from the analysis of the consumption of teeth,
- recognize the main breeds of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs,
- recognize structures of farms.
D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- assess the morphological and functional quality of an animal for improvement purposes,
- assess the suitability of the facilities with reference to animal welfare,
- assess the applicability of reproductive biotechnology in animals of zootechnical interest.
D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- organize, prepare and exhibit, to an audience made up of people of equal level of preparation, a presentation on a breed of zootechnical interest or even pets with their own evaluations supported by appropriate arguments,
- support an adversarial process with people of equal preparation and experts in different issues, of a regulatory, scientific, procedural and / or technological nature,
- demonstrate language properties in both written and oral form, as well as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews.
D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- consult and understand scientific texts, even innovative ones, bibliographic updates, normative dictations, so as to employ them in contexts not only usual for the profession, including research, but also originals,
- manage a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to guarantee an acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing lifelong learning. - Prerequisites
- Anatomy of Domestic Animals (Histology and Embryology general and special veterinary.
It is useful to have notions of molecular biology for the topic "biotechnology applied to livestock".
It is essential to know the physiology of lactation and reproduction to understand issues related to farm system and biotechnology applied to livestock production. - Teaching methods
- Theoretical lessons: classroom on all topics listed in the program . Seminars of experts in the field of pig breeding and poultry
Practical activity : visit of dairy cattle and beef cattle farms ; workshop for recognition of breed breeds , defects of conformation and age assessment by denture models
Self - directed learning activities : preparation of a presentation and description of a breed of dog and / or cat based on online searches and guided by the teacher - Other information
- Learning verification modality
- The exam is written, practical and oral.
The ascertainment of the achievement of the objectives envisaged by the course in its entirety requires a written exam on the topics covered in class and indicated in the program. Through the questions concerning the contents of the course it will be ascertained if the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the contents.
The paper provides 30 multiple choice questions.
The student must demonstrate to have the knowledge on the morphological evaluation of the animals of zootechnical interest, on the breeding of the treated species, on the main breeds and products of animal origin, on the biotechnologies applied to animals of zootechnical interest with particular reference to reproductive biotechnologies.
Score of 1 for correct answer, 0 for no answer and -0.25 for wrong answer.
It is possible to take the practice-oral tests with a score higher than 15.
A practical test is foreseen to demonstrate the ability on age determination through the analysis of the consumption of teeth in the equine and bovine species (also on preparations), on perpendicular defects, on signaling and on breeding facilities including salt of milking (also on images).
The practical test is passed if the distinctive signs of the consumption of the teeth on the preparation being examined are described and if more than 50% of the races-structures shown are recognized.
As regards the verification of knowledge (oral), the ability to contextualize knowledge and skills and to understand the importance of their correct use for the development of the livestock sector and for the effects on the animal's health and well-being will be evaluated. man.
It is an open stimulus interview with an open answer
The duration of the practical-oral test is about 30-40 minutes
the test will be evaluated based on the following elements:
Argumentative and executive rigor - From 2 to 5 points
Completeness - From 2 to 5 points
Language properties - 2 to 5 points
Depth of analysis and connection capacity - 2 to 5 points
The determination of the vote is based on knowledge (67%) determined through the written and oral test and skills (33%) through the practical test in relation to the division of the program into 67% theoretical and 33% practical.
It will be assigned from 0 to 1 additional point in relation to the quality of the preparation and presentation of the work foreseen for the SDL activities.
