Definition of hygiene and evolution of the concept of health. Salutogenesis. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary prevention. Introduction to Epidemiology. Demography, census, population pyramid, crude and specific rates, incidence and prevalence. DALY, QUALY. Sampling strategies, probabilistic and non-probabilistic techniques. Biases, mean, median, mode, standard deviation. Cause-and-effect relationship. Observational epidemiology, ecologic studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, Odds Ratio, Relative Risk, measures of impact. Experimental epidemiology, clinical trial, preventive trial (field and community trials). Criteria for a correct experimental epidemiology study conduction. Community-Based Participatory Research.
Natural history of infectious diseases and chain of infection. Transmission of infectious diseases. Outbreak of infectious disesases (epidemic, pandemic, endemic, sporadic). Epidemiology of main infectious diseases. Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases (early childhood). Inactivation of sources of infection and reservoirs of infectious agents, sterilization, disinfection, disinfestation, chemoprophylaxis, active and passive immunity. Human and other animal sera, monoclonal antibodies. Different strategies for vaccine preparation. Ingredients of vaccines. Infectious disease control, elimination and eradication.
