- The course is divided into two parts. The first will analyze Mark Twain's novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in the context of race studies, YAL (Young Adult Literature) and American culture. The second part will focus on the birth and growth of "Youth Culture" in the USA in the 20th century through the study of films, novel excerpts and selected criticism.
- Reference texts
- Mark Twain, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and Frank Baum, "The Wizard of Oz", in any available edition in English, plus selected criticism, which will be assigned upon request.
- Educational objectives
- Students attending this course are supposed to get a knowledge of Twain's classic novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in the context of classic American Literature, of present debates on race, and of YAL. A second part of the course will focus on the birth and the evolution of youth culture in the USA in the 20th century and it will be investigated with the aid of modern critical tools such as cultural studies, gender studies, new historicism, and the cognitive approach to humanities.

- Traditional classes, seminars, movies, debates.
- Learning verification modality
- According to the syllabus assigned to the student, the exam will take place in different modes. Students attending the course can choose to present a 40-minute account of the syllabus. Other students will be examined with traditional question/answers.

- The syllabus for Erasmus Students is: Mark Twain "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Norton Critical Edition, third ed. 1999 (available in the Library), INCLUDING the entire section on censorship and Toni Morrison's essay. Frank Baum, "The Wizard of Oz", any edition in English.
