A TEXTBOOK OF MODERN TOXICOLOGY THIRD EDITION Edited by Ernest Hodgson, 2004. A JOHN WILEY & SONS, INC., PUBLICATION - Educational objectives
- Aim of the course is to provide the basis for understanding and studying the effects of toxic substances at different levels of ecological complexity (individual, population, community), also considering their circulation modes in environment. In the context of the course will be addressed the ecotoxicological indicators for protection and assessment of ecosystems health, especially the aquatic ones, inrelation to the impact of priority and emerging pollutants.
- Prerequisites
- The student must have basic knowledge of ecology and chemistry.
- Teaching methods
- Face to face; Practical training;
- Other information
- Attendance to the course: Recommended
- Learning verification modality
- Final oral exam on the course contents.
- Extended program
- Introduction to applied ecotoxicology; toxicity assessments; the major classes of contaminants; damage assessment; toxicological assays; biogeochemical cycles of micropollutants; Predictive systems in ecotoxicology: partition coefficient; QSAR analysis, bioconcentration; bioaccumulation; biomagnification; degradation processes; Priority lists, EU regulation on chemicals (REACH). fugacity model, criteria and environmental quality objectives. Biomonitoring, diagnostic and prognostic tools: bioindicators bio-accumulators, and biomarkers; Ecological Risk Assessment. pollution: Atmosphere, Water, Soil.
Practical training in laboratory: biochemical application for the measurement of biomarkers of oxidative stress in aquatic organisms
