Contents | The course aims to explore the biosystematic of Chordata, considering the taxonomic challenges and the adaptive radiation of each group in relation to the organism / environment interactions. |
Reference texts | Zoologia dei Vertebrati Harvey Pough F., Janis C.M., Heiser J.B. Ed. Pearson Zoologia sistematica Westheide W., Rieger R. Ed. Zanichelli |
Educational objectives | The student is supposed to develop a complex and articulated notion of the vertebrate biosystematic. It is also expected that the student will know and be able to place phylogenetically the main taxa of the Phylum Chordata, in particular Craniota , carrying examples of some Orders and / or representative species. |
Prerequisites | Students need good knowledge on Zoology (General Zoology and fundamental Taxonomy), knowledge on comparative anatomy of Vertebrates and competences on the basic principles of evolution. Some Paleontological knowledge could be useful. |
Teaching methods | Lectures in the classroom and some practical activities at the Casalina Natural History Gallery (Unipg). 12 hours of practical training will be performed through a minimum of 4 field and laboratory activities related to some of the main methodologies for zoological research on vertebrates. |
Other information | The schedule of the lessons and the exams are available on the Department's website: http://www.dcbb.unipg.it The teacher can be contacted by e-mail for any need (exam dates, concepts). Additional teaching materials, such as course slides or scientific publications related to the topics discussed, are made available to all students with free access in the uni-studium web site during the course. |
Learning verification modality | Oral exam (2-4 questions), around half an hour on the topics of the theoric lectures and the practical activities performed. |
Extended program | Basic concepts of Biosystematic, Phylogenetic and linnean taxonomy, morphological and molecular philogenesis, applied to the problems and challenges of the taxonomy of Chordata. Diversity of Chordata and their phylogeny: -Cephalochordata; - Urchordata: Ascidiacea and Thaliacea; - Craniata; - Agnata (Myxinidae and Petromizonte); - Gnathostomata; - Chondroites; -Osteognathostomata Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii generalities and some main Orders; - Coelacanthiformes and evolution of the Tetrapods, colonization of the emerged lands; - Amphibians: Anura, Urodela and Gymnophiona. Generalities and some main Orders; - Amniotic vertebrates, Sauropsida, Testudinata and Lepidosauromorpha: Squamato and Ricochets. Generalities and some main Order; - Archosauria, Loricata and Birds, basic concepts about Dinosaurs; - Synapsida, mammalian reptiles and mammals. Monotremata, marsupialia and placentalia. Generalities and some main Orders; The Vertebrates of the Cicioni and Antinori collections at the Natural History Gallery of the University of Perugia, theoretical introduction to museum activity and observation of the specimens. 12 hours of practical training will be performed, probably with the following activities: - scientific birdwatching on the Trasimeno Lake (Oasi LaValle); - field activities and observation of Amphibians; - field activities and observation of Mammalians; |

Language of instruction | The basic course is held in the Italian language even if the use of foreignlanguage terms and scientific literature in English implies for the discussion of specific arguments directly in the native language without the help of the translation. |
Contents | The contents of the course intend to deepen the aspects of morphological systematics necessary for the recognition of species through a phylogenetic and molecular analysis necessary to understand the most typical aspects of evolutionary biology and reproductive and environmental adaptations |
Reference texts | There are many texts available to students who can become aware of the various theories offered by the various specialists. Where arguments are more closely linked to scientific research, articles published in the best international journals are utilized. Suggested texts: Strasburger Trattato di Botanica per le Università. Voll. 1 e 2. Delfino editore Gabriella Pasqua, Giovanna Abbate, Cinzia Forni Botanica generale e biodiversità vegetale. Piccin/Nuova Libreria. Kellog J.C. Botanica sistematica. Un approccio filogenetico. - [Piccin] Mayer A. 2015 Flora escursionistica dell’Italia, Prima parte – Italia centrale. Indipendent Scientific Edition. English: Stace C. A. Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics. Edward Arnold Grant W. Plant Biosystematics. Academic Press |
Educational objectives | The training objectives are focused on the knowledge of plant species in numerical terms to acquire a certain ability in the processes of determination and recognition of the collected samples. Starting from this level of basic knowledge, it will be possible to address the issues of biosynthesis related to the differentiation of forms and functions, the mechanisms of pollination and reproduction, of molecular differentiation in particularly complex groups from the point of view of classical taxonomy. |
Prerequisites | The student must have excellent knowledge bases in Plant Biology (Botany, Biodiversity, Vegetation Science, Corology). |
Teaching methods | Frontal teaching with laboratory experience. |
Other information | The teacher can be contacted by e-mail for any need (reception, exam dates, program). Additional teaching materials, such as course slides or scientific publications concerning the topics covered, are made available to students with free access to uni-studium during the course. |
Learning verification modality | Oral examination |
