Contents The Course gives knowledge on the analysis and the retrofitting of existing structures, with particular reference to masonry structures.
Reference texts Lecture notes provided by the teacher.
Educational objectives Aim of the course is to provide knowledge on the type of damage, the analysis methods and the retrofitting techniques of existing strutures.
Teaching methods Face to face lessons and practical training
Learning verification modality The oral exam consists of a discussion, no longer than fortyfive minutes, aimed at evaluating: the level of knowledge on the topics of the course (first Dublin descriptor), the skill of applying techniques for the assessment of existing structures and the retrofit intervention techniques (second Dublin descriptor), the ability of judgement of the choice of the best retrofitting intervention (third Dublin descriptor), the communication skill (forth Dublin descriptor).
Extended program Characterization of bricks and mortar, mechanical properties of masonry, check of safety;
Characterization of seismic action, damage due to earthquake, seismic analysis methods;
Existing structures: codes provisions, levels of knowledge analysis and verification;
Retrofitting techniques for foundations, masonry walls and columns, slabs, vaults and domes;
Analysis and retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures.

Educational objectives The course is aimed at providing the necessary knowledge to operate competently in the protection and restoration of the architectural heritage. In particular, for the students the fundamental objectives of the study are as follows.
Knowledge and understanding: the course focuses on providing the conceptual tools, the general framework of the methodological problems and of the technical-scientific means, which are useful in the disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge to approach historical buildings. In particular:
The module of Constructive features of historical buildings intends to provide the students with tools for the knowledge of constructive characters of ancient and modern building and to give them the awareness of the close relationship between the materials used and the evolution over time of construction techniques.
The module of Architectural Restoration aims at providing students with the methods and tools of analysis to operate in heritage buildings according to conservation principles.
Application of the knowledge and understanding achieved: the course is addressed to provide students with the following disciplinary skills: knowledge of the disciplinary fundamentals in an interdisciplinary framework, the ability to organise and to lead a campaign of investigation and specific surveys, the ability to produce exhaustive documentary materials; to apply the knowledge gained to the development of a diagnostic project on the historical building, both in the professional and in the study fields.
Capacity of independent judgment: the goal is to provide the critical tools needed to draw up a diagnostic praxis aimed at the intervention of conservation, which is aware of the specific features that each artifact has from large to small scale, from the problems of the decay of materials to those of the stability of the structures.
Learning skills: the course intends to ensure and verify the assimilation of the basic knowledge of the discipline, the ability to collect and to interpret data, and the ability to integrate knowledge and to direct the complexities independently, including those about interdisciplinary work environments.
Communication skills: to provide the students with the tools for transmission of the results using texts and drawings, especially in relation to the professional field.
Prerequisites Ability to perform an architectural survey, knowledge of architectural materials.
Teaching methods The teaching of the course involves, in addition to the normal ex-cathedra lessons, class exercises and to the Florentine buildings of various ages guided visits, which then will be subject to exercises on materials, constructive components and structural patterns.
Learning verification modality The examination consists on the discussion of the studied building.
The skills showed by the students are evaluated for a final mark.
Extended program Trilithon and thrusting structures.
Foundation types: strip foundations; isolated foundations; foundations on arches; deep foundations.
The vertical structures: materials, construction techniques, decay factors.
Floor and wooden roofs. Evolution of the construction technique, decay factors.
Arches, lintels, vaults and domes. Materials and building characteristics.
Wooden and reinforced concrete frameworks.
The use of iron in the historic buildings: ties, floors, coverings, complex structures.
Analysis and study of the buildings phases and transformations. Case studies.
Architectural diagnostics of buildings damaged by earthquakes. Relation between constructive context and structural instability.
