Contents
This course covers the basic concepts of tourism economics, such as tourist expenditure, tourist demand and supply analysis, theory of the tourist markets and macroeconomic analysis of tourism.

Educational objectives
Students are expected to learn how applying to the tourism reality the concepts already studied in different economics classes (micro- and macroeconomics; international economics). The main knowledge should cover:
How economists deal with tourist-consumer choices;
The intrinsic heterogeneity and plurality of the tourism product;
The complex system of the tourism production;
The imperfect markets of tourism;
Overview and main problem of domestic and international tourism markets through the main statistics.
The main skills (the ability to apply the knowledge) will be:
Analyze trends in touristic prices and demand for the destinations
Identify the main sources of competitiveness of different tourism destinations by resorting to the analysis of tourism area life-cycle.
Prerequisites
Attending microeconomics, macroeconomics and economic policy courses before to apply for Economics of Tourism is strongly recommended. At the beginning of this course, students are supposed to have the command on some principles and basic concepts, such as consumer and firm theory, general equilibrium theory and market failures, macroeconomic equilibrium and the Keynesian multiplier.

Learning verification modality
Students will be required to take a written exam made up of 3 open-ended questions. Each question will demand to discuss a specific tourism policy issue. This examination has the objective to test the acquisition of a basic knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts of tourism policy.
The exam will last 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Each answer (short essay, max 1 page lenght) will be rated with a mark ranging from 0 to 10.5. The final mark is the sum of these 3 sub-totals. Should the final mark exceed 30, the outcome will be 30 cum laude.
