Contents The main analytical, graphic and experimental tools for the static and kinematic study of the mechanisms, with determination of the actions on all components making up the machine; knowledge of the main articulated and motion transmission systems.
Dynamic and vibration analyses are instead dealt with in Module B.

Course lecture notes.
Educational objectives Mastery with the main methods of studying mechanisms. Knowledge of the main mechanisms and their characteristics, with particular reference to motion transmission systems, articulated systems, mechanisms with cams, gear wheels, wear mechanisms.
Prerequisites Passing the exam of Rational Mechanics, as well as a good knowledge of: Physics 1, of some topics of Geometry, of vector calculus and, in some cases, of technical drawing.
Teaching methods Frontal lessons with graphic, analytical and computer exercises.
Other information None.
Learning verification modality Written exercise, aimed at verifying the candidate's ability to write a discussion on one of the course topics, complete with theoretical premises, demonstrations, numerical verification and any supporting graphics or drawings, also assessing their degree of general organization. An oral question may follow the written test if the teacher deems it necessary.
During lessons, the teacher will organize one or more written exoneration tests, independent of the prerequisites, the success of which exempts from carrying out the final written test.
Extended program Generality, kinematic pairs, kinematic chains, mechanisms.
Friction. Coefficient and Friction angle.
Models of the phenomenon of wear of a single surface. Reye's hypothesis. Examples (thrust pin, single disc clutch and brakes).
Drum brakes and Romiti circumference.
Notes on the theory of lubrication.
Works and yields. Direct and retrograde motion. Spontaneous arrest mechanisms. Friction in the main kinematic pairs.
Articulated systems. Generality. Graphic study and examples of analytical study.
Graphic study of the articulated quadrilateral.
Graphic and analytical study of pin - rod mechanisms.
Cam mechanisms - tappet. Verification and summary.
Transmission ratio and homokineticity.
Cardan joint, Oldhan joint, homokinetics.joint
General information on motion transmission between parallel, incidental or skew axes. Primitives and matching friction wheels.
Introduction to tracking toothed wheels. Involute concept. Properties of involute cylindrical gear wheels. Notes on the main checks (interference, continuity, static failure, fatigue with Hertzian contact theory).
Tracking criteria for gear wheels. Form, addendum, dedendum, cut from denture.
Sprocket efficiency. Simple sizing and gearboxes reducers and multipliers.
Helical gear wheels. Notes on tapered gear wheels and helical wheels for skewed axles.
Notes on epicyclic gears.
Pulley belt mechanisms. Hoists and differential hoist.
Transmission with belts. Equation. Yield. Tension issues.
