Contents
Basics of history of the Italian language, including (among others): the concept of Vulgar Latin; the origins of the Italian language and the most important early documents; the theoretical debate on the volgare (“vernacular”) from Dante to the XVI century grammarians; the literary language.
The elements of articulatory phonetics and historical grammar of Italian and its dialects, with particular reference to Middle Italy.
The comedy "ridiculosa": the servant Guazzetto (with the linguistic areas of Umbria and the Perugian language of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries).

Educational objectives

Expected learning outcomes:
The course aims at providing students with the tools for a good understanding of the linguistic history of Italy and in particular of Umbria. The main skills that allow the application of the acquired knowledge will be: - linguistic analysis of a text and its placement in the Italian linguistic panorama.
Prerequisites

In order to fully understand this subject, students should have a basic knowledge of Latin language.
Teaching methods

Traditional lectures on each topic addressed in the course. Use of the projector in order to display documents to be linguistically commented.

Students who are not attending the exam must study for the exam, in addition to the above program, the essay by C. Marazzini, Le teorie, in Storia della lingua italiana, a c. di : Serianni e P. Trifone, vol. I. I luoghi della codificazione, Torino, Einuadi, 1993, pp. 231-329. To study the pp. 231-279.
Learning verification modality

The exam is aimed at assessing the acquisition of competences on the subject and the correct use of the technical vocabulary, as well as the capability of reasoning and synthesis. Students will be assessed on the topics treated during the lectures and on the relevant bibliography. The duration of the exams is variable.

An outline of the history of Italian language, including historical grammar of Italian and some Italian dialects.
