Educational objectives

Knowledge of the structure and properties of chemical compounds. Knowledge of the principles and chemical-physical mechanisms by which chemical compounds can interact and regulate processes of biological interest.

Atomic Structure. Atomic orbitals. Periodic table of elements. Stable and radioactive isotopes. Mole and Avogadro's number. Ionic and covalent chemical bonds. Electronegativity of the elements and polarity of the molecules. Hybridization of orbitals and geometry of the molecules. Resonance and electron delocalized bonds. Intermolecular bonds. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. States of matter. Internal pressure and condensation process of real gases; changes of state. Properties of liquids and solutions. Unit of concentration of solutions, vapor pressure, surface tension, osmotic pressure. Electrolytes and chemical equilibria in solution. Acids and bases. Calculation of pH: solutions of acids, bases, salts. Acid-base buffers. Chemical kinetics. Oxidation-reduction processes.
Structure and nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons. Conformational stereoisomerism. Geometric configurational stereoisomerism.
