Epidemiologic study design

Epidemiologic measures

Causation and association

Random and systematic error in epidemiologic studies

Descriptive epidemiology
Reference texts
Beaglehole R, Bonita R, Kjellström T. Epidemiologia di base Folini editore 2003 to be completed with lessons and slides stuff
or Rothman K J. Epidemiologia · Idelson-Gnocchi 2007 to be completed with lessons and slides stuff
or Bhopal R. Concepts of Epidemiology: Integrating the ideas, theories, principles and methods of epidemiology. Oxford University Press 2008
Educational objectives
Understanding of the role of epidemiologic methods in medicine

Understanding of basic requirements to project medical research

Analysis of epidemiologic data: understanding and calculation of basic epidemiologic measures

Critical appraisal of scientific papers using epidemiologic study designs

Ability to collaborate in the design and realization of valid epidemiologic studies
Prerequisites Students should have successfully passed the "Metodologia Medico Scientifica II" exam, which includes the medical statistics module and the bioengineering module (database creation and management)
Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons and practical training
Learning verification modality
The examination is based on a written test. An oral examination may be requested by students (optional).

Written examination. The test is meant to assess the knowledge of concepts which are central for critical reading of medical research and awareness of the role of correct study design and methods to produce medical evidence. Assessment of technical knowledge is prevailing.

Students are asked to answer multiple choice quiz, true/false quiz, to complete the definition of a central epidemiologic concept, to calculate basic epidemiologic measures, and to answer a open question. Duration: 1h.

Score is indicated for each item and the sum of scores is 31 points. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

Oral examination is intended to integrate point notions investigated with the written test. Duration about 20 minuts. The possibility to take the oral exam is limited to students which have passed the written test
Extended program
Introduction to Epidemiology: scope and definitions
Foundations of Epidemiology: evolution of epidemiologic study design to investigate health
Epidemiologic measures. Measures of disease frequency and measures of association
Disease causation and determinants of health and disease
Systematic error (bias) in epidemiologic studies
Classification of epidemiologic studies
Demography (outline)
Public health surveillance and evaluation based on routinely collected data
Time trends
Spatial analysis of diseases and health determinants
