Educational objectives Introduction:
“Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology” is the only teaching of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery; lectures about “Psychology of Relationship” are given at the 1st year of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery.
The essential aim of the teaching is to provide the students with useful concepts to the basic knowledge of the discipline. The most important acquired skills are about:
- The Psychiatric Semiotics (perceptual, thought, memory, attention and mood disorders, disorders of consciousnees, volition and psychomotricity, learning disabilities, personality, temperament and character disorders)
- Clinical Psychopharmacology (mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, antidepressants, antipsychotics)
- Clinical Psychiatry (Substance-related and Addictive Disorders. Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders. Depressive Disorders. Bipolar and Related Disorders. Mental Health Legislation.)
The capability in applying the acquired skills of the student will be examined by the means of clinical cases (n. 10). They will be introduced during the teaching and they will focus on basic semiological aspects and differential diagnostic criteria. The students will be required to decide essential psychopharmacological treatments suitable for the clinical cases.
Prerequisites In order to understand the contents of the teaching and to reach the learning aims, it is necessary to have passed with success the 1st year exam “Psychology of Relationship”. Furthermore, the knowledge of CNS physiopathology and psychopharmacology is required in order to understand the topics introduced in the lectures. These points represent important prerequisites.
Teaching methods The teaching is divided into:

- lectures about the above mentioned topics and clinical cases.

- clinical training: from June to October n. 2 students will assist the psychiatric ward round and the consultation-liaison activity of the Psychiatric Ward of the University Hospital of Perugia, for two days, from 8 am to 2 pm, always with the supervision of a tutor.
Learning verification modality The exam is divided into:
- an oral test: a 15 minutes discussion for the assessment of the acquired knowledge of the student about the 5 above mentioned teaching topics. The test will take in consideration the pertinence of the acquired lexicon.
- a written test: there will be three sessions (summer, fall and winter sessions); the test is based on the appropriateness of the theoretical knowledge and of the capability in understanding and differentiate. In particular, it is composed by 15 multiple choice questions (n. 4), with 3 questions for each teaching topic. The test will be passed with 9 right questions. Average test time: 20 minutes.
