Educational objectives The specific objective of the course is the acquisition of the general concepts of pathophysiology and laboratory medicine related to pregnancy and human reproduction, and the principles underlying the use of diagnostic markers in specific pathological contexts.
Prerequisites In order to understand and to know to tackle the majority of the information given within the Course, you must have deep knowledge of Physiology and General Pathology. Moreover, knowledge and methodological contents of Anatomy and Biochemistry are mandatory prerequisite for students planning to follow this Course with profit.
Teaching methods Face-to-face lectures with audiovisual material on all subjects of the Course.

Learning verification modality The exam consists of an oral test with a duration depending on the performance of the test itself (about 20 minutes). The test aims at evaluate the level of knowledge and understanding achieved by the student.

Extended program General principles of laboratory diagnostics: operating methods of the laboratory, description of diagnostics phases, biological variability, concept of biomarker.
Pregnancy markers, immunological diagnostic tests, hints of prenatal diagnosis.
Complete blood count, erythrocyte markers.
Microcytic, megaloblastic and haemolytic anemias.
Blood groups and fetal erythroblastosis.
Leukocyte formula, leukocytosis and leukopenias.
Haemostasis: coagulopathies and thrombocytopenias.
Serum protein electrophoresis.
Urinalysis.
Hepatopathies and hepatic markers.
Cardiac biomarkers.
Diagnosis of autoimmune diseases.
