Introduction to Infectious Diseases of the animals; Impact of Infectious Diseases in domestic animals; emerging and re-emerging Infectious Diseases; notifiable Infectious Diseases; Transboundary Infectious Diseases, Infectious Diseases in wildlife; zoonosis.
Multispecies infectious diseases: Leptospirosis; Rabies; Coxiellosis.
Infectious diseases of dogs: Canine Distemper; Infectious hepatitis; Canine Herpesvirus infection; Kennel Cough and Canine Respiratory Disease Complex; Lyme Disease; Ehrlichiosis; Rickettsiosis; Anaplasmosis; Canine Parvovirus infection.
Infectious dieseases of cats: Coronavirus infection and Feline Infectious Peritonitis; Panleukopenia; Feline Respiartory Disease Complex (infection by Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus and Chlamydia felis); Parapoxvirus infection; infection by Mycoplasma haemofelis and haemominutum; Bartonella infection; Feline retroviruses (feline immunodeficiency virus; feline leukemia virus).
Diagnostic protocols of infectious diseases in dogs and cats.
Vaccinal protocols in dogs and cats.
Visit of a public kennel and a private one, in collaboration with the veterinary services of the territory of Perugia.
Clinical rotation with simulation of submission and processing of specimens; execution of biomolecular tests from suspected infectious samples. Interpretation of results of clinical cases present in the database of the hospital.

Educational objectives
The main aim of the course is to make students able to recognize different Infectious Diseases and identify their specific features to diagnose and control them.
Main knowledge acquired will be:
-general knowledge of Infectious Diseases, their economic and sanitary impact;
-concepts of evolution of etiological agents;
-features of each etiological agent causing specific Infectious Diseases of dog and cat; epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, lesions of the Infectious Diseases of dog and cat discussed during the course;
-knowledge of the main diagnostic and preventive methods applied for each Infectious Disease.
The main competence will be:
-to recognize the main clinical and microbiological features of each Infectious Disease of dog and cat;
-to apply the best diagnostic procedures in different clinical cases;
-to apply the best vaccine protocol, based on the risk/benefit analysis.
Teaching methods
The course is developed in 18 hours face-to-face; 6 hours for practical training (for 4 groups) and 2 hours for clinical rotation (for 12 groups).
Each Infectious Disease of dog and cat is described in a face-to-face lesson.
Seminars about diagnosis of infectious diseases in different veterinary settings and about vaccine protocols and their possible consequences will be performed.
At the end of the course students will visit a public and a private canine and feline shelter.
