Contents | DNA: mutation, genes, alleles and loci. Chromosomes. Sex chromosomes, X-inactivation. Mendelian genetics. Codominance, multiple alleles, expressivity, penetrance, modifying and lethal genes. Pleiotropic effects, epistasis. Chiasmata and crossing-over. Linkage. Summary and practical implications on animal breeding. |
Reference texts | The suggested book is "Genetica animale applicata" ("Applied animal genetics") by G. Pagnacco |
Educational objectives | This course represents the first teaching of genetics and examines the basic elements of Mendelism. The main aim of this teaching is to provide students with the bases needed to address the study of Mendel's genetics within of breeding programs. Main knowledge acquired will be: Meiosis and Mitosis -knowledge of normal karyotype and banding; -sex determination and X-inactivation; -genes,alleles and loci; -Mendelian genetics. The main competence (i.e. the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be: -identification of mode of inheritance (dominant/resessive) of Mendelian traits in animals; -evaluation of exceptions and extensions of Mendel's laws; -use of mendelian genetics in practical animal breeding. |
Teaching methods | The course is organized as follows: -lectures on all subjects of the course; -exercise at the microscope lab to see karyotypes of different species. Students will be divided into groups (maximum 20 students per group) and there will be 1 tutorial of 2 hours |
Extended program | Introduction. DNA. Meiosis and Mitosis. Mutation, genes, alleles and loci. Monozygous, heterozygous, genotype, phenotype: Chromosomes. Sex chromosomes. X-inactivation and dosage compensation. Mendelian genetics. The law of segregation. The law of indipendent assortment. Examples. Codominance, multiple alleles, variable expressivity, incomplete penetrance, modifying genes. Lethal genotypes, pleiotropic effects. Dominant and recessive epistasis. Examples. Both alleles recessive, both alleles dominant, dominant at one locus crossed with recessive at other. Examples. Chiasmata and crossing-over. Linkage. Summary and practical implications on animal breeding (horse, cattle, sheep, pig, rabbit, dog, cat, bird, etc.). |

Contents | The major animal phyla. Criteria for classification. Metazoa. Radiata and Bilateria. Protostomia and Deuterostomia. Vertebrate chordates. Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. |
Reference texts | Refer to the professor FONDAMENTI DI ZOOLOGIA 2/ed + DIVERSITÀ ANIMALE 4/ed. Cleveland P. Hickman et al. Ed. Mcgraw-Hill |
Educational objectives | The main objective of teaching is to provide basic knowledge of biology, taxonomy and phylogeny of the major animal phyla. The course aims to make understand to the student the importance of organization of the body plan, functional adaptations and environmental interactions of the major animal taxa, with particular attention to the vertebrate chordates. |
Prerequisites | None |
Teaching methods | Theoretical lessons and practical training |
Extended program | The animal kingdom. The systematic categories, from species to phylum. Protozoa and Metazoa. Radiata and Bilateria. Protostomes (Lophotrochozoans and Ecdysozoans) and Deuterostomes. Coelomata: Schizocoelomates and Enterocoelomates. The major animal phyla: Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Nematodes, Molluscs, Annelids, Arthropods, Echinoderms and Chordates. Protochordates and Craniates. Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. |
