Educational objectives
In accordance with the Dublin indicators the student must:
show to have acquired scientific bases to apply diagnostic procedures, aimed at identifying the causative agents of pathological forms. Furthermore, the student must also have acquired practical scientific knowledge to evaluate the health and well-being of the animals through on-farm inspections. (D1);
to be in position to know how to apply therapeutic and preventive and/or corrective actions to management for "solving" the health problem (D2);
must have acquired complete autonomy of judgment in formulating the diagnosis and in assessment of the health status of a group during on the farm inspection (D3);
D4 communication skills must be implemented, in particular ability to interact and communicate with different interlocutors with scientific and non-scientific backgrounds (owners and business operators of Poultry Industry Company , pet owners) (D4);
D5 iit will be necessary to evaluate the student's "elasticity" in acquiring practical and scientific knowledge addressed to "Solving problem"in field (D5).
Prerequisites
The student must have - knowledge related to microbiology and infectious diseases aimed at the identification of etiological agents and at their pathogenetic mechanisms to formulate a diagnosis and apply appropriate therapeutic and vaccination protocols
- knowledge related to pathological anatomy aimed at the identification of gross lesions during autopsy
- knowledge related to nutrition and animal husbandry as several poultry diseases are technopathies, due to incorrect management
Teaching methods
The traineeship of avian pathology is mainly characterized by practical activities
- visits to the farm
-autopsies
- observation of histological preparations
- reading of bacteriological examination and antibiogram
- slides of gross lesions characteristic of the most common infectious diseases in birds
Other information

Learning verification modality
The learning assessment is daily and is carried out, depending on the case: through the necropsies of birds , clinical examinations in farms , behavior in simulations of emergency states (eg avian flu) or of other notifiable infectious diseases. (Salmonellosis, Tuberculosis , chlamydiosis, etc.).
The student is asked to put into practice what he / she should have acquired during the teaching course
Extended program
The traineeship is organized in 15 days:
1) visits in farms
2) observations slides concerning gross lesions of the most common bacterial diseases
3) necropsy of birds
4) observation of histological preparations suggestive for diagnosis
5) necropsy of birds
6) visit in farms
7)observations slides concerning gross lesions of the most common viral diseases
8) Private and Public veterinarian in salmonellosis outbreak simulation
9) observations of lesion concerning the most common non infectious diseases
10) necropsy of birds
11) Private and Public veterinarian in flu outbreak simulation
12) necropsy of birds
13) Bacteriological diagnostics: reading of bacterial culture and antibiograms
14)Planning vaccine program in different species of birds (chickens, turkeys, pigeons and game birds) and productive categories (eggs, meat, breeder)
15) Necropsy in birds
