Since only breeding-related diseases are reported in farm rabbit, this course will consider both anatomical and physiological predispositions together with breeding management of this species to give all the information needed by a future veterinarian willing to work in this field.
Course introduction;
The rabbit: anatomical and physiological characteristics, breeds;
Farming systems; (4 hours)
Breeding-related diseases: colibacillosis, clostridial, Pasteurella and staphylococci infection, and dermatophytosis. Therapy and control; (5 hours)
Myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease: epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and prophylaxis; (3 hours)
The rabbit as a pet: clinical and case management; (3 hours)
Experience on field at rabbit farm facilities (10 hours)

Educational objectives
Acquire knowledge about the most common diseases that affect the rabbit and understand all aspects that influence health management. The rabbit, is an animal species considered "unconventional" and generally poorly treated in the courses of study in Veterinary Medicine. The aim is to improve the student's basic knowledge about:

-the relationships between host, pathogens and environment

- the main laboratory diagnostic techniques used with interpretation of the results

-the fundamentals of the application of biosecurity measures and sanitary-sanitary management of farms.
Prerequisites
In order to understand and be able to apply the notions learned during the CIP (Corso Insegnamento Professionalizzante), the student is required to have knowledge in several subjects such us anatomy, physiology, both infectious and parasitic diseases, and rabbit breeding.
Teaching methods
The course, which takes place in 25 hours, is organized as follows:
A theoretical part where the knowledge about anatomy-physiological characteristics, breeding systems and the major rabbit diseases are provided or implemented.

An application practical part that involves visits to farms with the purpose of providing the student with the ability to measure in the solution of problems related to health management in rabbit breeding.

Learning verification modality
For this kind of course (ADE) there will not be any final examination. On the other hand, an ongoing evaluation of skill learning will take place during the whole course. The approach to rabbit breeding-related diseases, the ability of choosing appropriate diagnostic protocols and the formulation of both direct and indirect prophylaxis plans will be evaluated then.
