Educational objectives
The course takes into account the rabbit, an animal species generally poorly treated in the degree course in Veterinary Medicine, with the aim of improving the basic theoretical knowledge and practical capacities of the students regarding the management of the reproduction of this species. The course is compliant with the teaching aims (SUA A4.a) and employment outlets (SUA A2.a), the course of Reproductive management in cuniculo breeding are:
D1. KNOWLEDGES AND COMPREHENSION ABILITIES. The student must implement the knowledge on reproductive physiology and corporate management of this species.
D2. KNOWLEDGES APPLICATION AND COMPREHENSION ABILITIES. The student must be able to carry out an assessment of the estrous cycle, the female's sexual receptivity, the BCS and the nutritional status of the animal's well-being. And he must be able to perform blood samples for hormonal evaluations. The student must also be able to orient himself in techniques of artificial insemination and natural mounts
D3. AUTONOMY IN OPINION.
The Student must be able
- carry out all the assessments suitable for achieving the objective, namely the improvement of the reproductive management of the rabbit farm..
- critically solve all the problems that may arise.
D4. COMMUNICATION ABILITIES.
The Student must be able:
-to apply the right terminology in describing
the problems and characteristics of the reproductive management of rabbit farm.
D5. LEARNING ABILITIES
The Student must be able:
-to consult and critically examine the
literature in order to analyze more in deep
subjects and propose strategies in solving
problems.
D5. LEARNING ABILITIES
The Student must be able:
-to consult and critically examine the
literature in order to analyze more in deep

problems.
Prerequisites
The student who follows the teaching is in the fifth year of his university career and should have all the knowledge necessary to understand and to be able to apply the content covered in the CIP. However, in order to avail the best teaching are require knowledge of anatomy, reproductive physiology, nutrition, infectious and parasitic diseases and lowly of livestock management.
Teaching methods
The course is organized in 5 consecutive days, for a total of 25 hours in the following way:
- A theoretical part where they are provided or implemented knowledge about the anatomical and physiological characteristics and reproductive systems of the rabbit.
- Practical work in the farm that include: semen collection and its evaluation, assessment of sexual receptivity of the female and evaluation of the estrous cycle, artificial insemination and natural mating, pregnancy diagnosis by abdominal palpation, blood samples for hormone assessments, the evaluation of the BCS and of the nutritional state of animals.
Other information
Practical activities will be performed at the experimental farm of the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Science of the University of Perugia and in part at the didactical center of the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
The activity schedule is available at VMD http://www.medvet.unipg.it/didattica
Learning verification modality
For the course is not scheduled a final exam but ongoing evaluation of learning and subsequent putting into practice of the topics carried out.
It is evaluated the approach to reproductive management and the acquisition of practical skills inherent the reproduction rabbit
