Contents
The program consisted on the administration of case studies or case study simulations that could be useful to stimulate the student's ability to manage under the diagnostic point of view parasitic diseases disease diagnostic procedures.
Reference texts
Illustrative material useful to learn to recognized the most important parasitic biologic forms will be given through presentations formulated by the Professor and saved in a specific folder titled "Guide to the morphological identification of the main parasites of the dog, cat and horse" downloadable at the "Unistudium" platform (link "https://www.unistudium.unipg.it/unistudium/login/index.php), both in collections available at the Educational Class of the Ex-Section of Parasitology.
The handbook recommended for the course "Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of Domestic Animals" is very useful.
Genchi M., G. Traldi, Genchi C .: Manual of Veterinary Parasitology. 2010
Educational objectives
D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
To let the students to acquire a better autonomy with the main techniques applied to the diagnosis of parasitic diseases of veterinary interest and with the morphometric identification keys of parasitic biological forms.
D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training activity, the student must be able to correctly approach the management of zoonotic and non-zoonotic parasites in the zootechnical, ambulatory, research laboratories and slaughterhouses.
D3- MAKING JUDGMENT:
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate the ability to process clinical cases of a parasitic nature with a critical aspect.
D4- COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student must be able to demonstrate language properties and arguments about clinical cases of a parasitic nature.
D5- LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training activity, the student will be able to correctly approach the diagnosis to the management of parasitic diseases.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites basing on the to Regulation LM42:
a) Frequency signature of the Course of "Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of Domestic Animals";
It could be useful to follow with maximum profit the course to have passed the exam of "Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of Domestic Animals".
Teaching methods
The course will be held entirely in the Didactic Laboratory of the Ex- Section of Parasitology by the Professor. Daily the Professor will administrate n. 4 clinical cases of parasitological interest collected at OVUD. The Professor will stimulate the construction of a diagnostic algorithms and allow the students to analysis of biological samples obtained from case studies using the most appropriate parasitic diagnostics techniques. The final part of each lesson the Professor and the students will observe together at microscopy the parasitic forms detected, in order to arrive at the correct morphological identification. Students could consult procedure manuals and identification manuals that may help them in both the diagnostic tests and the etiological diagnosis of the detected parasitic biological forms.
Learning verification modality
The last two hours of the course will be dedicated to verifying the ability acquired by the student in the recognition of preparations of parasitological interest. The practical test will consist in the recognition of the parasitic forms present in n. 6 slides from biological materials (eg skin scarification, coprological examination, ear plug etc) taken from animals suffering from different parasitic diseases admitted to OVUD. Each student will have a maximum of 2 hours to transcribe the diagnosis related to each slide; the test will be passed after correct recognition of at least 4 of the 6 preparations. The result of the passing of the test and the attribution of the eligibility will be displayed in paper form outside the ex Parasitology Section within 24 hours from the completion of the test.
