- The main objective of this class is to provide knowledge of the macroscopic and histological lesions of the digestive system, male and female genitals systems and integumentary system, of making the student able to understand the factors and mechanisms that led to the lesions and to gain knowledge of the anatomical and pathological patterns of the diseases affecting the aforementioned systems (knowledge).
D1. Knowledge and understanding.
The student must have acquired basic knowledge about the pathogenetic mechanisms, the macroscopic and histological lesions of the digestive, female and male genitals and integumentary systems and therefore of the gross pathology and of the histopathological lesions of the main diseases of these systems.
D2. Applying knowledge and understanding.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- use correct methods, to perform necropsy, gross examination of organs and pathology samples of the systems;
- the correct procedure for sampling and managing tissues for lab examination;
- the technique for performing cytological and histological examinations;
- the formulation of the morphological diagnosis of the first level through the correct use of scientific terminology for the description of macroscopic and histological lesions, with eziopathogenetic considerations
D3. Making judgement.
At the end of the course, the student must be able to:
-making a list of differential diagnoses when similar anatomopathological lesions are present
-set up a diagnostic procedure through the application of the correct collateral investigations to reach a definitive diagnosis
D4. Communication skills
At the end of the training activity, the student will be able to :
-use correct and appropriate terminology for the description of the lesions; for filling the form for sending samples to the pathology; to communicate with colleagues.
D5. Lifelong learning skills
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- consult and critically examine the available bibliographic sources to deepen the topics and propose strategies for solving problems. - Prerequisites

- The course includes:
- 36 h frontal lectures in the morning or afternoon, other week, given in the classroom
- Common Practical Activities (12h) in the morning or afternoon, performed in labs (groups of max 15 students) or interactive discussion on gross pathology held using slides. Common Practical Activities are organized in 4 groups of max 15 students.
- Clinical Rotation (4h) in the morning, at the Veterinary Pathology Service, arranged in 11 teams of 5/6 students. - Other information

- THEORETICAL CLASSES
Digestive System
- Malformation, circulatory disturbances, degenerative lesions, inflammations and tumors of the oral cavity (2 h).
- Anomaly of esophageal size: atresia, megaesophagus, strictures. Esophageal Inflammations and tumors (1 h).
- Changes in ruminal content: ruminal acidosis and bloat; foreign body syndrome in cattle; inflammations of the forestomachs. Changes in gastric and abomasal size and position; circulatory disturbances, degenerative lesions (2 h).
- Gastric ulcer; inflammation of stomach and abomasum; dysplastic, hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions of stomach and abomasum (2 h).
- Congenital anomalies of gut and change in size: megacolon, intestinal atresia. Inflammations of intestine; gut displacement; gut tumors (8 h).
- Physiopathology of the liver; malformations of the liver; vascular (portosystemic shunt) and biliary cystic diseases; circulatory disturbances; degenerative changes; hepatic necrosis; liver inflammations; hyperplastic and neoplastic diseases of the liver (6 h).
- Malformations, regressive and inflammatory lesions of exocrine pancreas; nodular hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions (1 h).
Integumentary system
- Pattern analysis of principal dermatitis/dermatosis in different species (4h).
Cutaneous tumors (1 h).
Male and female Genital Systems
- Congenital defects and circulatory disturbances of male and female genital systems (1 h)
- Pathology of female genital system (2 h)
- Pathology of testis, epididymis, spermatic cord, accessory genital glands, penis and prepuce (2 h)
- Neoplastic diseases of the male and female genital systems (2 h).
- Morphologic patterns of the main diseases of the male and female genital system of domestic animals (2h).
PRACTICAL TRAINING
- Morphological and etiologic diagnosis of viscera and organs of different animal species (6 h).
- Interactive discussion about anatomopathological and histopathological cases (6 h).
CLINICAL ROTATION
- Work within laboratories of the Veterinary Pathology Service (4 h).
