Contents DNA: mutation, genes, alleles and loci. Chromosomes. Sex chromosomes, X-inactivation. Mendelian genetics. Codominance, multiple alleles, expressivity, penetrance, modifying and lethal genes. Pleiotropic effects, epistasis. Chiasmata and crossing-over. Linkage. Summary and practical implications on animal breeding.
Reference texts The suggested book is "Genetica animale applicata" ("Applied animal genetics") by G. Pagnacco
Educational objectives This course represents the first teaching of genetics and examines the basic elements of Mendelism.

The main aim of this teaching is to provide students with the bases needed to address the study of Mendel's genetics within of breeding programs.

D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must:
- know meiosis and mitosis,
- have the knowledge of the normal karyotype and banding,
- know the sex determination and X-inactivation,
- know the genes,alleles and loci,
- know the Mendelian genetics.

D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
-recognize the mode of inheritance (dominant/resessive) of Mendelian traits in animals,
-recognize the exceptions and extensions of Mendel's laws;

D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
-use of mendelian genetics in practical animal breeding.

D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- organize, prepare and exhibit, to an audience made up of people of
equal level of preparation, a presentation on a Mendelian trait with their own evaluations supported by appropriate
arguments,
- support an adversarial process with people of equal preparation and
experts in different issues, of a regulatory, scientific, procedural and / or
technological nature,
- demonstrate language properties in both written and oral form, as well
as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a
correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job
interviews.

D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- consult and understand scientific texts, even innovative ones,
bibliographic updates, normative dictations, so as to employ them in
contexts not only usual for the profession, including research, but also
originals,
- manage a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to guarantee an
acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing
lifelong learning.
Prerequisites
Teaching methods The course is organized as follows:

-lectures on all subjects of the course;

-exercise at the microscope lab to see karyotypes of different species. Students will be divided into groups (maximum 20 students per group) and there will be 1 tutorial of 2 hours

X-inactivation and dosage compensation. Mendelian genetics. The law of segregation. The law of indipendent assortment. Examples. Codominance, multiple alleles, variable expressivity, incomplete penetrance, modifying genes. Lethal genotypes, pleiotropic effects. Dominant and recessive epistasis. Examples. Both alleles recessive, both alleles dominant, dominant at one locus crossed with recessive at other. Examples. Chiasmata and crossing-over. Linkage. Summary and practical implications on animal breeding (horse, cattle, sheep, pig, rabbit, dog, cat, bird, etc.).

Educational objectives The teaching represents the first approach to zoology. The main objective of the teaching is to provide students with basic knowledge of the biology, systematics and phylogeny of the main animal phyla.

- know the biology, systematics and phylogeny of the main animal phyla,
- know the organization of body planes, functional adaptations and environmental interactions of the main animal groups, with particular attention to vertebrate chordates.

At the end of the training, the student must:
- frame the main animal phyla from a systematic point of view,
- identify the body plan of the main animal groups,
- know the biological characteristics of the main animal phyla, with particular attention to vertebrate chordates.

At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- recognize animal specimens belonging to the main animal phyla.

At the end of the training, the student must be able to:

Coelomata: Schizocoelomates and Enterocoelomates. The major animal phyla: Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Nematodes, Molluscs, Annelids, Arthropods, Echinoderms and Chordates. Protochordates and Craniates. Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals.
