- Analysis of the main themes and of the main historiographic tendencies related to the study of the centuries XVI-XVIII, as the geographic discoveries, the most relevant demographic and social transformation, the religious fracture, the development of the modern State, the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment, the main political revolutions. Lecture notes given by professor - Educational objectives
- Be able to individuate and to analyze the main economical, social and cultural dynamics which characterized the development of the Modern Age; be able to examine the traditional periodizations, reflect critically about the interpretations of the events and about the use of important historiographic categories.
- Prerequisites
- In order to be able to understand and assimilate the themes analyzed during the course, the studend shoudl already know the main historical features and key elements of the Middle Age. He should also already use with a certain degree of confidence the proper lexicon of the historical disciplines. It would also be advantageous if he had already studied in his past curriculum some modern history, in order to be acquainted with the fundamental elements and historic dynamics of the XV-XIX centuries.
- Teaching methods
- Frontal lessons with the help of power-point presentation; oral exercises and discussions with the students to review and reflect about the program.
- Learning verification modality
- At the end of the lessons, the teacher will propose to the students a written test, not compulsory, which has the aim to help the students to face a first part of the program (XV-XVII centuries) and, if this written exam is succesfully passed, to overcome in advance a part of the program.
Thre written test is composed by 10 short-compositions and fill in the gap questions and one brief essay.
If the student decide not to register for the written exam, or in the case he won't pass it, he will enroll directly in the final oral exam: it consists on an interview, 20 minutes long approximately, aiming to ascertain the knowledge level and the understanding capabilities acquired by the student on the theoretical and methdogical contents as indicated in the program. - Extended program
- The course is divided in two parts: in the first part (20 hours approximately), it will analyze the main matters and the most important historiographic themes related to the study of XVI-early XIX centuries. In particular, it will dwell on the huge economic, social, cultural and religious transformations which took place in the European countries in this period (geographic discoveries, religious fracture, development of the modern State, scientific revolution, Enlightenment, main political revolutions).
