General mycology: the fungal cell, replication and virulence fators of fungi; yeasts, molds, and dimorphic fungi. Diseases caused by fungi: superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous, systemic, and opportunistic infections. Malassezia furfur, dermatophites (Microsporum spp, Trichophiton spp,, Epidermophiton); Histoplasma, Coccidioides, Paracocidioides, Blastomyces. Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus. Educational objectives | Provide students of the Degree in Medicine Surgery with the opportunity to attend the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for a practical in-depth study of the knowledge of the discipline. The knowledge of the general principles and the skill to obtain biologic samples for microbiologic analysis. |
Teaching methods | Internship at external clinics of the Complex Microbiology Structure (groups of 4 students) Theoretical and practical exercises in the laboratory of the Complex Microbiology Structure. Students will be divided into groups (8 per group), the duration of each exercise will be two hours. |
Extended program | Frequency in outpatient clinics for external users. Learning of sampling techniques of biological samples including the conjunctival, pharyngeal, auricular, urethral, vaginal, cervical, rectal, wound swab, blood samples. Attendance at the laboratories of the S.C. of Microbiology. Learning and execution of the main methods of isolation, identification of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites. Evaluation of susceptibility testing to antibiotics. |
