- Franz Grillparzer - The Current Relevance of a Classic
150 years after the death of the great Austrian playwright and writer Franz Grillparzer, this course will focus on his main works, from the mythological to the historical plays (dealing with the “Habsburg” topic, but not only), from the poetic production to the short stories, from his diaries to his extraordinary autobiography. Going beyond certain common interpretive approaches, we will try to reread these texts revealing their complex relationship with the socio-cultural context of the Restoration. The current relevance of this author emerges in a surprising way, both in the discourse on political power, on family structures, on the role of women, and in the reflection on language.
All of the author’s works are available in the Reclam (economical) edition; handouts will also be distributed. Two films will be shown.
