Educational objectives | The Course aims to provide the student with an overview of the historical evolution of medical-care activity, with a view to increasing awareness of the historical-cultural and methodological-scientific and technical developments of the profession, making it critically aware of its roots, theoretical foundations, history, and the dimension of its becoming. At the end of the Course the student will have to: - know how to frame in a historical perspective the evolution of the concepts of body, health and disease. - have a dynamic view of the main theoretical and practical developments in medical care and the becoming of the health professions - have an overview of the developments and value of medical-scientific knowledge and activity, enabling him or her to have an immediate and critical awareness of the advances, status, debate, and challenges to which today's medicine and medical-rehabilitative-care practice has come. |

Extended program | - Introductory notations on the History of Medicine. Historical evolution of medical care practices and the concept of disease. Notations on paleomedicine and paleopathology: Medicine in the earliest written documents. - Classical Greco-Hellenistic and Roman medicine. - Medieval medicine: from monastic medicine to the birth of hospitals; medical training proper to dogmatic and scholastic medicine; medieval medical schools; the birth of the first universities; the great epidemics of the Middle Ages. - From Renaissance medicine to the dawn of modern medicine. - The developments of scientific medicine and medical welfare practice up to to the threshold of the 19th century - Medicine in the 20th century and the state and challenges that today's medicine has reached, including discoveries, technological applications, new diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic possibilities. |
