Contents
This course chosen by students intends to provide a holistic view of emerging infectious diseases to understand the complexity of this system.
Topics such as the role of ecology, biodiversity and anthropization in the onset of emerging infectious diseases will be covered.
Case studies of infectious risk analysis in specific contexts and the appropriate biosecurity measures to be adopted will be proposed.
Through narrative medicine and the results of the Micro-Epidemic One Health project, there will be a practical part to learn from stories about zoonoses told by experts.
Reference texts
Materials of the lecturer will be available on the system unistudium. The access will be explained during the course.
Educational objectives
D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The main objective is to understand the complexity of the factors causing emerging infectious diseases and to know how it will be possible to act to reduce this risk.
The student must:
- know what ecology and biodiversity are and how they work and how they relate to emerging infectious diseases;
- know what qualitative medicine, narrative medicine and the importance of communication in Public Health are;
-know the principles of biosecurity and their application.

D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training activity the student must be able to:
- apply the concepts of biodiversity and ecology in controlling emerging infectious diseases;
- know how to evaluate the appropriate application of biosecurity measures;
- to learn from a story the emotional and decision-making aspects concerning infectious diseases.

D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training activity the student should be able to:
-evaluate the impact of factors that can determine an emerging infectious disease in a population;
- know how to evaluate a biosecurity plan.

D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training activity the student should be able to:
- knowing how to organize, prepare and present a speech on some aspects of epidemiology, using simple but technical terminology;
- support a discussion with people with different skills and different levels of preparation;
- demonstrate fluency in language, as well as the ability to use sufficiently appropriate terminology for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews.

D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training activity the student should be able to:
- knowing where to consult updated information, selecting useful information and knowing how to evaluate possible interactions of risk factors;
- appropriately communicate aspects of infectious diseases to stakeholders.
Teaching methods
The course is carried out in 25 frontal hours in interactive way and group work.
Seminars will be held with experts on the subject, with skills other than veterinary ones, to promote the transversality of teaching.
