Contents Basic knowledge concerning the pathophysiology, the diagnostic process and the treatment of the main emergency surgical pathologies: abdominal trauma, intestinal obstruction, peritonitis and digestive hemorrhages

Educational objectives The course is aimed at allowing the student to acquire mastery of the diagnostic-therapeutic courses in emergency surgery.
Prerequisites Knowledge of some topics of general surgery and gstroenterology is required:
- Complications of peptic ulcer
- Acute diverticulitis and its complications.
- Acute cholecystitis and its complications.
- Acute appendicitis and its complications.
- Meckel's diverticulum
- Acute pancreatitis and its complications.
- Acute intestinal ischemias
- Hernias of the abdominal wall
- Portal hypertension
Teaching methods Lectures using powerpoint projections. The lesson material (except copyright-protected illustrations) is always made available to students electronically (file in pdf) the day before the lesson on the ateneum platform: https://www.unistudium.unipg.it/unistudium/login/index.php.
Other information Core Curriculum Elementary Teaching Unit valid from 2016-2017:
UDE 790: Indicate the diagnostic approach to the acute abdomen.
UDE 1186: Detect signs of peritoneal inflammation.
UDE 1268: Hypothesize the diagnosis of acute intestinal obstruction (from mechanical or dynamic ileum) indicating the possible causes.
Assume several differential diagnoses starting from the history data for the clinical onset of mechanical ileus and paralytic ileus, intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction indicating, where necessary, the diagnostic investigations and therapeutic guidelines.

Learning verification modality Interview lasting approximately 15 minutes divided into 2 questions, 1 of which relating to emergency surgery and 1 to traumatology. A further question may be asked in the event of an unsatisfactory answer to the 2 previous questions.

Learning verification modality METHOD OF CONDUCTING THE EXAM: Oral test lasting approximately 15 minutes divided into 2 questions, 1 of which relating to cardiovascular pathologies and 1 relating to the remaining pathologies. Any further questions relating to the minimum knowledge necessary for the management of medical emergencies may be asked in the event of an unsatisfactory answer to the 2 previous questions.

Contents The professionalizing internship period will be conducted in the Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine departments, where the student will be supported by the professor and medical tutors with proven professional experience.

Educational objectives Acquisition of the ability to conduct an anamnestic investigation, to interpret data from the physical examination, laboratory tests and instrumental tests. Acquisition of the ability to carry out epicrisis and set a therapeutic course.
Prerequisites Knowledge of medical semiotics, pharmacology and internal medicine.
Teaching methods During the practical exercises, students will be accompanied by medical personnel for a maximum of three students per shift. During these shifts, students will take a look at the medical emergencies affecting the internist department, put their knowledge in terms of differential diagnosis and specific diagnosis for individual pathologies into practice, take a look at the main therapeutic procedures for the different cases.
