- Pragmatics of the English language and translation.
Linguistic pragmatics in the analysis of the English language and in its application to the theory and practice of translation.
Text linguistics and pragmatics have defined principles and processes without which it is impossible to interprete and translate texts with analytical awareness and methodological rigour. Since pragmatic phenomena are inextricably linked to context, knowledge of these phenomena and awareness of their non-universal applicability are fundamental to the interpretation and translation of texts belonging to every domain of human knowledge. - Reference texts

- To provide students with the concepts and methodologies of linguistic pragmatics needed to analyze the English language and to reflect upon the translation process.
Knowledge and understanding:
-pragmatic theories (context, deixis, speech acts, implicature, presupposition, relevance, politeness);
- cross-cultural awareness;
- application to English-to-Italian and Italian-to-English translations - Prerequisites

- - Lectures on pragmatic theories, in particular the pragmatics of the English language.

- Data analysis, in particular analysis of texts translated from English into Italian, and from Italian into English.

In the academic year 2024/2025, the University of Perugia has made provision for 11 categories of students to be eligible for attending lectures on line (DaD). - The students follow two parts of each course: a theoretical part of the course concerning the linguistics and translatological analysis of the language, which lasts one semester; and a practical part of the course that is taught at the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) and lasts the whole year (both semesters, 80 hours, classes for students enrolled in the degree course in Foreign Languages) aimed at learning and practising the language. The objective of this practical part is to achieve a C2 level of language knowledge.
International language certifications (considered valid for two years for the entrance exam) do not exempt the student from the final course test held at the end of the annual language courses at the CLA. This examination is mandatory to access the theoretical part of the exam with your Professor in the Department, and is an integral part of the final grade.

- Final written or oral exam.
WRITTEN EXAM: a test (about 2 hour length) aimed at ascertaining the acquisition by the student of the notions and concepts presented, as well as her/his ability to communicate them in written academic English.
ORAL EXAM: an interview in English (about 30 minute length) aimed at ascertaining the acquisition by the student of the notions and concepts presented, as well as her/his ability to communicate them in spoken academic English.
The result of the CLA test is an integral part of the final grade.

- Pragmatics of the English and translation.
Analysis of the English language from a pragmatic perspective and its effects on translation theory/practice. The topics of classical pragmatics (deixis, direct and indirect speech acts, implicature, presupposition, relevance) and the thorny issue of context from the point of view of complexity theory will be addressed in order to reflect on how these tools can be applied to the analysis of texts and to texts translated from English into Italian, as well as from Italian into English. Since these phenomena do not have universal application, the issue of their relevance to intercultural translation will be addressed.
