Educational objectives The aim of the course is to provide students with the basis for the sustainable design of public and private green areas.

The main knowledge acquired will be:

- Relationship between design and environment.

- Dynamics of nutrients in the soil and the needs of plants.

- Characteristics of fertilizers and growing media.

- Techniques to realize green areas.

- Needs of ornamental plants and use as a function of the pedoclimatic scenario of destination.

- New eco-sustainable solutions for the management and maintaining of green areas.

The main skills will be:

- To know design strategies with low environmental impact.

- To know how to evaluate the main physico-chemical characteristics of soil.

- To find information from the customer for planning the work.

- To know how to analyze the site and draw up the project schedule.

- To know how to choose the most suitable plant species for the place.

- To plan the management/ maintenance of public and private green areas.

Learning verification modality Written and oral exam on the dates available on the Exam Calendar published on the DICA website. The exam consists of a discussion lasting about twenty minutes aimed to ascertain the knowledge level acquired by the student.

In the event that the student intends to anticipate the exam in a previous year to the one scheduled in the study plan, it is recommended to attend the cycle of lessons and to take the exam in the first useful session after the lessons have ended, thus respecting the semester of teaching planning.
Extended program Provide students with the necessary skills in environmental sustainability, aimed at minimizing the impacts in the perspective of a sustainable design of green areas.

Program:
- Study of environmental impacts for the development of sustainable design.

- Study the soil chemical characteristics as a function of the availability of nutrients for plants.

- Principles of plant physiology (radical absorption and photosynthesis).

- Fertilization and use of growing media with low environmental impact.

- Study of technical realization of green areas (lawns, flowerbeds, hedges, vertical green, green roof) and choice of plants according to their use.

- Eco-sustainable solutions in the design and management of green areas.
