Contents The aim of the Orthognathic course is to enable students to recognize,
distinguish, and classify dysgnathic clinical conditions; to acquire
knowledge of OPT evaluation, other diagnostic radiographs performed
during orthognathic check-ups, and cephalometric tracing; to understand
the principles of growth and development of the stomatognathic system;
and to be able to perform a plaster model analysis with diagnosis in the
three spatial planes and spatial assessment.

Educational objectives owledge of the program topics- a good knowledge of orthodontic materials- the ability to perform a complete initial orthodontic examination
(anamnesis, medical records, general and orthodontic dental
assessment)- the ability to request diagnostic tests with appropriate justification (x
rays, specialist examinations by ENT, ophthalmologists, pediatricians, and
orthopedists)- the ability to perform a second orthodontic examination (including
examination of plaster models, space assessment, and cephalometric
tracing) and formulate a diagnosis- the ability to promptly assess the urgency of orthodontic treatment,
with particular attention to interceptive treatment

Teaching methods lectures + pre-clinical internship exercises in cephalometry, analysis of
plaster models, study and evaluation of the opt, analysis of spaces in the
arch

2) Definition of "malocclusion"
Classification of malocclusion from a dental perspective in the three
planes of space.
- Sagittal (Angle classes, overjet)
- Vertical (overbite: deep bite, open bite)
- Transverse (unilateral and bilateral crossbite, scissor bite)
3) Deciduous dentition, mixed dentition, permanent dentition. Periods of
change
4) Principles of craniofacial growth
5) Bad habits
6) Dental anomalies (shape, number, volume, position, development)
7) Orthognathic check-up:
- Clinical examination
- Square study models according to Tweed
- Model examination
- Space analysis (Moyers index in mixed dentition, effective space/space
required ratio in permanent dentition)
- Orthopantomography
- Lateral X-ray + cephalometric tracing
- Carpal X-ray + skeletal age determination
- Posterior-anterior X-ray, occlusal X-ray, intraoral X-ray
- Intraoral and facial photographs (frontal and profile)

- Importance of cephalometry for skeletal diagnosis
- Anatomical tracing
