- Contents
- The course aims to introduce students to the study of public libraries in the digital era. Specifically, it will examine the functions of a library and its organization. Additionally, other relevant topics such as the information and knowledge society, e-books, etc. will be explored. Throughout the course, practical exercises are planned to focus on using the library catalog, bibliographies, and bibliographic databases.
- Reference texts
- The information on reference texts will be provided as soon as they become available; other bibliographical indications will be provided during the lessons. For updates see www.unistudium.unipg.it/unistudium/. Specific instructions for non-attending students will be provided at the end of the course. Working students may contact the instructor during office hours or by sending an email to andrea.capaccioni@gmail.com. Students with disabilities and/or with SLD who, having completed regular accreditation through SOL, have obtained access to University services, can apply for the compensatory tools ensured by law (e.g. textbooks in digital format; teaching materials in accessible formats: presentations, handouts, workbooks, provided if necessary in advance of the lessons), for which consult https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa. For the request, students are invited to ask the teacher, who will put them in contact with the Disability and/or DSA Department Coordinator (prof. Alessandra Di Pilla: alessandra.dipilla@unipg.it)
- Educational objectives
- The course aims to understand the purposes and functions of contemporary libraries; to acquire basic knowledge of library history, library science, and publishing. Additionally, to know how to use the tools (catalog, bibliographic databases, bibliographic directories) offered by the library; and library services. The course aims to provide students with basic library-related skills through seminars and hands-on activities (such as using the library catalog, bibliographic databases, etc.). The main knowledge students will acquire includes: the origins of the contemporary library, basic elements of library science, and aspects of publishing. Furthermore, the course introduces students to the use of tools for study and research (catalogs, bibliographic databases, bibliographic directories) and to the use of library services. Group activities are planned to foster independent judgment and improve communication skills.
- Prerequisites
- In order to be able to understand how to tackle the course, students must have cultural and historical basic notions; these are notions that the student should have already aquired in his/her school curriculum.
- Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows: lectures on all course's topics; workshop. Students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD), after consulting with the instructor, may request accessible teaching materials (presentations, handouts, exercise books), which can be provided in advance if necessary, as well as the use of other technological tools to support their study. For general information, please refer to the University Services at https://lettere.unipg.it/home/disabilita-e-dsa and contact the Department Representative (Prof. Alessandra Di Pilla: alessandra.dipilla@unipg.it). Students who may be interested in checking the possibility of attending classes remotely (DaD) can refer to the following website: Remote Learning Procedure - University of Perugia https://www.unipg.it/didattica/procedura-dad
- Other information
- Please see . For further information contact your professor. Students with disabilities and / or with SLD, info: https://lettere.unipg.it/home/disabilita-e-dsa
- Learning verification modality
- The exam consists of a final oral examination that assesses the student's knowledge and ability to understand and synthesize the topics covered during the course and deepened through the recommended texts. The oral examination will verify the student's ability to communicate what they have learned and how they do it, including language properties and exposition methods. The exam duration is approximately 20 minutes, but it may vary depending on the course of the examination itself. It begins with a question on a topic chosen by the student. Students with disabilities and/or DSA for the verification test format can benefit from inclusive technologies, compensatory tools, and dispensative measures provided by the regulations. Please contact the instructor well in advance. For more information: https://lettere.unipg.it/home/disabilita-e-dsa
